Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Istanbul to Athens Explorer tour?
Istanbul to Athens Explorer is a 15-day journey across two of the ancient world's greatest civilisations. Starting at Istanbul's Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, you fly to Cappadocia to sleep in a cave hotel at Gamirasu, visit the underground city at Kaymakli, cross to Pamukkale's white calcium terraces and the ruins of Ephesus, then catch a flight to Athens. From there you explore the Acropolis, the birthplace of the Olympics at Olympia, the Oracle at Delphi, and the monastery-topped rock pinnacles of Meteora. Groups in Turkey run up to 20 people with a minimum of 4. The tour runs year-round on a fortnightly schedule.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Turkey and Greece?
Yes, this is the definitive introduction to both countries. The itinerary is structured to give you the context to appreciate what you are seeing, with expert local guides in both Turkey and Greece. You don't need any prior knowledge. The logistics (domestic flight from Istanbul to Kayseri, Izmir to Athens flight arranged separately) are all explained in detail before departure.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The tour runs year-round with departures approximately every two weeks. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most popular, with warm temperatures and smaller crowds. Summer (June to August) is hot in Turkey and Greece, especially at open-air sites like Ephesus and the Acropolis, but the weather is reliably sunny. Winter departures (November to March) are available and benefit from lower prices and quieter sites, though some entrance fees to Greek sites are reduced in winter.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper tours floating around. Istanbul to Athens Explorer covers 15 days across Turkey and Greece, includes a domestic flight from Istanbul to Kayseri, all accommodation in 4-star and boutique hotels (including the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Cappadocia), 14 breakfasts and 7 dinners, entrance fees to all Turkish sites, a full-time local guide in Turkey and a local guide in Greece, and a tipping kitty. It is a highly logistically involved itinerary across two countries.
What is actually included in the price?
4-star and boutique hotel accommodation throughout, all transport in AC vehicles, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, domestic flight from Istanbul to Kayseri (Cappadocia), local tour guide in Turkey and Greece for sightseeing, entrance fees to all sites visited in Turkey, 14 breakfasts and 7 dinners, and a tipping kitty.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights are not included. You also need to book (and pay for) your own flight from Izmir (ADB) to Athens (ATH), which is not included in the tour price. Greek site entrance fees are also not included (budget approximately the equivalent of around 79 Euros in summer or 45 Euros in winter to cover the Acropolis, Delphi, Mycenae, Olympia and Meteora). A Greek hotel residence tax is payable locally to your hotels. Travel insurance, meals not in the itinerary, and tips for your guide and driver are also excluded. See the Dates and Prices page for current specifics.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full at booking. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Istanbul to Athens Explorer?
This is a moderate-pace sightseeing tour. Sites like Ephesus, the Acropolis and Meteora involve walking over uneven ancient stone surfaces and some climbing, but nothing requiring special fitness. The Petra-style reverse hike is not on this itinerary. Wear comfortable walking shoes with grip.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
There is no upper age limit. The pace is set by the group and guide, and your guide adjusts at each site. Ephesus and the Acropolis have paved paths that are manageable for most travellers. Meteora involves visiting monasteries on rock formations that require some climbing, though the main viewing areas are accessible.
What if I have mobility issues?
Cappadocia's underground city at Kaymakli involves some low corridors and steps. The Acropolis has sloped paths and steps. If you have significant mobility limitations, contact us and we can advise on which parts of the tour are more or less accessible.
Is Turkey safe to visit?
Turkey is a major international tourism destination visited by millions of people annually, and the tour operates in well-established tourist areas on the western part of the country. We monitor official government travel advisories and have local teams on the ground. The areas on this itinerary (Istanbul, Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale, Ephesus) are considered safe for tourism.
Is Greece safe to visit?
Greece is one of the safest countries in Europe for tourists. The sites on this itinerary (Athens, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio) are all well-established tourist destinations with excellent infrastructure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Both Turkey and Greece are popular with solo female travellers. In Turkey, dress modestly particularly in mosques and more conservative areas. In Greece, dress codes are more relaxed. On a group tour you always have company.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can direct you to local medical facilities. Both Istanbul and Athens have excellent private hospitals. UK travellers in Greece should carry their EHIC card for reduced-cost medical treatment in EU countries. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Hotels throughout are at the local 4-star level with some interesting boutique properties. In Istanbul you stay at the Point Hotel Taksim, a luxury property 500m from Taksim Square with a spa, indoor pool and Turkish bath. In Cappadocia, the Gamirasu Cave Hotel is built directly into the volcanic rock formations, with each unique suite carved into the cave. In Athens, the Athenaeum Grand Hotel has 90 rooms with views over the city and a free shuttle to the Acropolis. All hotels are en-suite with air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
What is the cave hotel in Cappadocia like?
Gamirasu Cave Hotel in the Ayvali village of Cappadocia is one of the most distinctive stays on any tour we operate. Each suite is individually designed and carved into the famous volcanic rock formations that give Cappadocia its otherworldly appearance. The hotel has a restaurant and conference centre and is within walking distance of the village centre. Sleeping in a cave hotel here is a genuinely memorable experience.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. All hotels on the tour have Wi-Fi. In Turkey and Greece, connectivity is generally reliable in hotels. Remote archaeological sites naturally have no coverage.
Can I upgrade or add extra nights?
Extra nights in Istanbul at the start or end of the tour are available as a paid option. The tour is also available as a private departure with upgraded accommodation on request.
What kind of food will we eat?
In Turkey you will enjoy meze (small plates including hummus, dolma, olives and cheeses), grilled meats, pide (Turkish flatbread), baklava and Turkish tea. In Cappadocia, the optional cooking class lets you prepare a traditional 3-course Tandir meal. In Greece, expect moussaka, grilled octopus, spanakopita, fresh salads and local wine in towns like Nafplio and Delphi.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
In Turkey, stick to bottled water. In Greece, tap water is generally safe to drink. Hotels in both countries provide bottled water. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle for the Turkish sections to reduce plastic waste.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The Istanbul to Athens Explorer is popular with solo travellers. In Turkey the group is capped at 20 with a minimum of 4. In Greece you join a seat-in-coach arrangement with a maximum of 50. You can share a room with another solo traveller or pay the single supplement.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on twin share. A single supplement is available if you want your own room throughout the tour.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
In Turkey, the group is capped at 20 with a minimum of 4. In Greece the tour operates on a seat-in-coach basis with a maximum of 50 (shared with other operators' travellers). The group tends to be a mix of English-speaking nationalities with particular appeal to Australians, New Zealanders, UK and North American travellers.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour is available as a private departure on any date throughout the year. Contact us for a customised quotation.
Do I need a visa for Turkey and Greece?
For Turkey: most nationalities need an e-Visa, obtained in advance online at evisa.gov.tr. UK nationals and citizens of some Schengen countries currently do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Check current requirements for your nationality. For Greece: most Western nationalities (UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, South Africa) do not need a visa. Check current requirements at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
What should I pack?
Pack for variable temperatures across 15 days. Turkey in spring is around 15-25C; summer reaches mid-30s. Greece is similar. Modest dress is required in mosques in Turkey (shoulders and knees covered, women should carry a headscarf). Comfortable walking shoes with grip are essential for ancient sites. Bring sun protection and a light jacket for evenings.
Are any vaccinations required?
For Turkey, Hepatitis A and Tetanus are typically recommended. No additional vaccinations are generally required for Greece. No Yellow Fever certificate is required for either country. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into Istanbul (IST or SAW) and out of Athens (ATH). You also need to arrange a separate flight from Izmir (ADB) to Athens (ATH) for around Day 8. Good options exist with Turkish Airlines and low-cost carriers. We can advise on flight booking. All airport transfers in Istanbul and Athens are included.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included in your tour price and covers routine tips along the way. Your tour guides and drivers are not covered by the kitty. Budget separately for guide and driver tips based on your satisfaction with their service.
Can I take a cooking class in Cappadocia?
Yes. An immersive 4-hour cooking experience in a Turkish village house, where you learn to prepare a 3-course Tandir-style meal, is available as a paid option in Cappadocia.

Reserve online, pay a deposit or hold a reservation with no immediate payment. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure. We provide detailed pre-departure information including flight booking advice for the Izmir-Athens leg.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, repatriation and travel delay. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance. UK travellers visiting Greece should also carry their EHIC card.
What is your cancellation policy?

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

This tour uses a range of good quality hotels mainly at the local 4-star level but with some interesting boutique style hotels included too. Please check the Accommodation section for more information on the normal hotels used on this tour. This list is given as a guide though and hotels may change from time to time to others of a similar standard.
Accommodation levels and hotels may be slightly different in Turkey and Greece to general Western standards. We regularly inspect all the hotels we use to ensure that the service you receive is as close as possible to your expectations. Please check your hotel room when you first arrive (hot water, cleanliness etc.), so that your guide can assist with any problems if required.

We will contact you with your arrival hotel details normally a couple of weeks before departure. Further hotels through the tour are not advised in advance.

Check-in Times: Official hotel check-in times in Greece and Turkey are between 14.00 and 15.00. However, we do always try to ensure that if you arrive early, you can check into your room as soon as possible. We can nearly always get you into your hotel rooms by midday, but please understand that it is out of our control if the hotel is full and it takes a little longer. You will have full use of the hotel facilities while you wait if there is a short delay.
