Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Taste of Lebanon tour?
This 8-day private culinary journey from Beirut to Beirut is one of the most food-focused itineraries in the Middle East. You eat your way through Lebanon's remarkable diversity: a SAJ flatbread breakfast in Annaya, goat cheese at Gout Blanc factory, wine tasting at Chateau Musar (the first organic vineyard in Lebanon, rooted in 6,000 years of vine cultivation and Phoenician origin), seafood in Batroun with views of the Mediterranean, traditional mezza in Rachiine-Zgharta, breakfast at the legendary Al Hallab patisserie in Tripoli, Roman temples at Baalbek, and the UNESCO holy valley of Qadisha. Seven breakfasts and six lunches are included. The tour runs for parties of 2 or more on any dates throughout the year.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Lebanon?
Yes, and it is an excellent introduction. Byblos, the world's oldest continually inhabited city, sets the historical context early. Jeita Grotto (a 9km cave system) and the Harissa cable car offer stunning natural and religious experiences. The food thread gives the trip coherence: even if historical sites are new to you, the meals tell Lebanon's story through flavour.
What is the difference between this and your other Lebanon tours?
The Taste of Lebanon (8 days) is a culinary-first itinerary, structured around food experiences, market visits, a cooking class in Beirut, factory and winery visits, and regional cuisines. Lebanon Encounters (8 days) covers similar geography with more emphasis on historical and cultural sites. Lebanon Discovery (8 days) is another variant. If food is your primary lens, the Taste of Lebanon is the right choice.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Lebanon is a year-round destination. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Summer (June-August) is hot but popular, particularly in the mountain areas like the Qadisha Valley. Winter can bring snow to the mountains while the coast stays mild.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
This is a fully private tour with a dedicated guide and driver, 4-star and boutique hotels throughout, 7 breakfasts and 6 lunches at curated restaurants, entrance fees to all listed sites, all transport in AC vehicles, and airport transfers. The winery visits, factory tours and cooking class are all included in the guided programme.
What is actually included in the price?
7 nights in 4-star and boutique hotels, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, all transport and transfers in AC vehicles, entrance fees to all sites visited, English-speaking guide for all tours, 7 breakfasts and 6 lunches, plus the included food experiences (Chateau Musar wine tasting, cheese factory, cooking class, food tasting experiences).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees (free on arrival for most nationalities), travel insurance, dinners (except any specifically included), drinks and snacks not listed, tips, hotel gala dinner supplements on Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your place with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Light. This is primarily a food and culture tour with gentle walking at historical sites, markets and souks. The Qadisha Valley is scenic but involves mostly viewing from paths rather than strenuous hiking. Most days centre on driving, dining and site visits.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This is an excellent tour for older travellers. The pace is relaxed, transport is private, and most activities are seated or gentle walking. As a private tour the schedule can be adjusted to your preferred pace.
What if I have mobility issues?
The historical sites and market areas involve some uneven stone surfaces and steps. Jeita Grotto requires walking through cave passages. Most other sites and restaurants are accessible. Contact us with specific requirements and we can advise.
Is Lebanon safe to visit?
Lebanon has experienced periods of instability and the security situation can change. Before booking and before travel, check current government travel advisories for your country. Many people travel to Lebanon and have excellent experiences, particularly in the areas covered by this itinerary, such as Byblos, the Bekaa Valley and the coastal towns. Your guide is well-briefed on current local conditions.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Lebanon, particularly Beirut and the tourist areas on this route, is relatively open and accessible for women. Dress modestly at religious sites and in traditional village areas. As a private tour with a guide and driver, you are accompanied at all times.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Beirut has good private medical facilities. Your guide can arrange access to medical care. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
All hotels are 4-star or boutique. In Beirut you stay at the Gems Aparthotel in the Hamra district, close to shopping, dining and the corniche. In Byblos, the Aleph Boutique Hotel overlooks the Mediterranean, 5 minutes from the ancient ruins. In Chtaura (Bekaa Valley) the Massabki Hotel is a boutique property in a private 16,000 sq m forest setting with its own river, a piano bar and an Oriental Restaurant. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.
What is Byblos Hotel like?
You stay at the Aleph Boutique Hotel in Byblos, a 26-room property with unique decor, minibars, a rooftop restaurant and beach accessibility. It sits within the historical city of Byblos, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. All 4-star and boutique hotels on this tour provide free Wi-Fi.
Can I add extra nights?
Yes. Extra nights in Beirut before or after the tour are available as pre-tour and post-tour add-ons.
What kind of food will we eat?
Lebanese cuisine is considered one of the world's great cuisines, and this tour explores it in depth. Highlights include a SAJ (flatbread) breakfast in Annaya, goat cheese direct from Gout Blanc farm, wine tasting at Chateau Musar, fresh seafood at Batroun with ocean views, traditional mezza with Grilled Chicken, Kebbe Zghertewiye, arak and fruits in Rachiine-Zgharta, a classic Knafeh dessert and the legendary morning spread at Al Hallab patisserie in Tripoli. A cooking class in Beirut is also included.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in Lebanon. Tap water is not reliably safe to drink. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good option for reducing plastic waste (code ENCOUNTERS25 for a discount).
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. As a private tour starting from 2 people, solo travellers can either book with a companion or contact us for solo pricing.
Do I have to share a room?
Rooms are twin sharing. A single supplement is available for solo travellers who prefer their own room.
What is the group size?
This is a fully private tour with no set group size. It runs for 2 or more people. You will not be joined by strangers.
Can I book this as a private tour?
This is already a private tour by design. It runs on your dates with your own guide and driver.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The culinary focus and multi-site daily schedule are better suited to adults and older teenagers. The Roman ruins at Baalbek and the Jeita Grotto caves can be genuinely engaging for curious children.
Do I need a visa for Lebanon?
Most nationalities, including US and EU citizens, can enter Lebanon without a visa or receive a visa on arrival. Some nationalities (including Israeli passport holders and those with Israeli stamps in their passports) are not admitted. Check requirements on the official Lebanese General Security website before booking.
What should I pack?
Lightweight clothing for warm weather. A light cardigan or shawl for religious sites and cooler mountain evenings. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) for mosque visits. Comfortable walking shoes for souks and archaeological sites. Lebanon uses European two-pin plugs at 220V.
Are any vaccinations required?
No specific vaccinations are required for Lebanon. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are generally recommended. Consult your GP or a travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into and out of Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut. We include 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers.
What about tipping?
Tipping for your guide and driver is not included. Your guide will advise on typical amounts.
Can I visit the Jeita Grotto?
Yes. Jeita Grotto, a 9km limestone cave system and a finalist in the New Seven Wonders of Nature, is included on Day 5, combined with the Harissa cable car visit.
Can I visit the Roman temples at Baalbek?
Yes. Baalbek is on the Day 6 itinerary. The main temple is dedicated to Jupiter and is one of the best-preserved Roman temple complexes in the world.
Can I add extra days in Beirut?
Yes. Extra nights in Beirut before or after the tour are available. Beirut's food scene, nightlife and day-trip options to Sidon and Tyre make extra time well worthwhile.
How far ahead should I book?
As a private tour available throughout the year, booking 4-6 weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Peak periods (summer and Christmas-New Year) may require more lead time for hotel availability.
How does booking work?
Contact us with your preferred dates and group size. Pay a deposit to confirm, with the balance due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. Given Lebanon's security situation, cancellation cover is also strongly recommended.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies. Full terms are in the booking conditions on our website. We are UK-registered and financial protection is provided through Trust My Travel.
What if the security situation changes before I travel?
Check current government travel advisories before booking and again closer to departure. We will advise you of any significant changes affecting the itinerary. Full cancellation terms apply as per the booking conditions.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
