Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Tunisia Encompassed tour?
Tunisia Encompassed is our definitive 13-day small-group journey through the full length of Tunisia, running from Tunis to Tunis. You participate in a UNESCO-listed Sejnane pottery workshop with the women potters of Sejnane, hike in the cork oak forests of Ain Draham and share a traditional lunch with a local family, explore the subterranean Roman villas of Bulla Regia, visit Dougga (North Africa's best-preserved Roman site, UNESCO), take a Tunisian cooking class in the Tunis Medina, tour Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said, make harissa from scratch in Nabeul, explore the Roman Amphitheatre of El Jem (UNESCO), go on a 4x4 off-road Sahara adventure to a Berber desert camp at Tembaine in the Grand Erg Oriental, and visit the Star Wars filming locations at Ong Jemel and Ksar Hadada. Groups run 3-12 people.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Tunisia?
Tunisia Encompassed is an ideal first Tunisia experience because it shows you the full range of the country: Roman history, Islamic Imperial Cities, Berber villages, Saharan desert, and Atlantic coast medinas. Having a local guide throughout means you understand the context behind everything you see.
What is the difference between this and your shorter Tunisia tours?
Tunisia Encompassed is 13 days and covers the entire country. Tunisian Encounters (9 days) is a shorter version. North Tunisia Explorer (6 days) focuses on the north only. If you have 13 days and want to see everything from the Roman north to the Saharan south, Tunisia Encompassed is the complete experience.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Regular small-group departures run from October to the end of May. The desert south can be extremely hot in summer. Spring (March-May) is particularly beautiful, with wildflowers in the northern highlands. October to December is very comfortable throughout. The tour can also be booked privately on any date.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, Tunisia is often positioned as a budget destination. But Tunisia Encompassed is a genuinely premium cultural experience. Included are 11 nights in 3-4 star hotels and 1 night at Camp Abdelmoula in the Saharan dunes (with private bathrooms and hot showers), all transport including 4x4 vehicles in the desert, all entrance fees, the Sejnane pottery workshop, harissa-making, olive oil tasting, family lunch, Tunisian cooking class, Sahara desert bread-making demonstration, a 4x4 desert expedition, and 12 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 7 dinners.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 11 nights 3-4 star hotels (Carlton Hotel Tunis, La Foret Ain Draham, Thugga Hotel, Les Oliviers Palace Sfax, Ksar Hadada Tataouine, Palm Beach Palace Tozeur), 1 night at Camp Abdelmoula Berber desert camp, all transport and transfers (AC minibus/coach plus 4x4 for desert sections), 24-hour airport transfers, local guide throughout, all monument entrance fees, Sejnane pottery workshop, harissa-making, olive oil tasting, family meal and bread-making, Tunisian cooking class, Sahara desert experience, 12 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 7 dinners.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa (no visa required for stays under 90 days for USA, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand), travel insurance, tipping (not included in price), hotel gala dinners if applicable, drinks, personal expenses, and meals not listed. Your guide will brief you on current tipping norms at the start.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Tunisia Encompassed?
Easy to moderate. The Ain Draham forest hike is a guided forest walk on relatively easy terrain. The 4x4 desert expedition is bumpy but not strenuous. The medina walking (Tunis, Sousse, Kairouan) involves some uneven paving. No trekking or special fitness is required.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Tunisia Encompassed is well suited to travellers of all ages. The pace moves between different regions but the activities are accessible. The desert camp has comfortable tents with proper beds. Contact us about any specific concerns.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Medina streets in Tunis, Sousse, and Kairouan can be uneven. Getting in and out of 4x4 vehicles requires some agility. Contact us to discuss specific needs.
Is Tunisia safe to visit right now?
Tunisia has been rebuilding its tourism industry and is a welcoming destination for international visitors. The main tourist sites and the tour route are well-established. Always check current UK Foreign Office travel advice before travel and before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Tunisia is generally safe for women on guided group tours. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is appreciated in medinas and religious sites. Your guide will advise throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Tunis has good hospitals. Your guide has first aid training and local contacts throughout the route. Travel insurance with medical cover and repatriation is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a remarkable range of properties: Carlton Hotel in Tunis (Art Nouveau 1926 building on Avenue Habib Bourguiba), La Foret in the Ain Draham mountain forests, Thugga Hotel near the Roman ruins of Dougga, Les Oliviers Palace in Sfax (5-star Belle Epoque), Ksar Hadada near Tataouine (an actual Berber fortified granary that served as the Star Wars Mos Espa slave quarter set), Palm Beach Palace in Tozeur, and Camp Abdelmoula deep in the Grand Erg Oriental dunes. All properties are en-suite.
What is Camp Abdelmoula in the Sahara like?
Camp Abdelmoula at Tembaine is nestled deep in the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental. Accommodation is in spacious canvas tents with proper beds, duvets, and private bathrooms with hot showers. Dinner is served communally, often followed by a campfire under the most dramatic starry sky in North Africa.
What is the Ksar Hadada stay like?
Ksar Hadada is a centuries-old Berber fortified granary near Tataouine. Staying here means sleeping in the actual rooms used as the set for the Mos Espa slave quarters in the Star Wars films. Clean, comfortable rooms with on-site restaurant.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at most hotels including the Carlton Tunis. The desert camp at Tembaine has no connectivity, as you would hope.
Can I upgrade?
Extra nights in Tunis before or after the tour are available. Contact our sales team about accommodation upgrades on a private departure.
What kind of food will we eat?
Tunisian food is outstanding: spicy harissa (which you make yourself in Nabeul), couscous with lamb or fish, brik (crispy pastry with egg and tuna), fresh grilled seafood in Sfax and Tabarka, and the sweet pastry makroudh in Kairouan. The olive oil tasting at Domaine Ben Ismail is a highlight. The cooking class in Tunis teaches you to prepare a traditional Tunisian dish from scratch.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian food is manageable throughout Tunisia. Vegan and gluten-free diets require advance notice. Inform us when you book.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water quality varies in Tunisia. We recommend bottled water or a Water-to-Go filter bottle throughout the tour.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very popular with solo travellers. The small group size of 3-12 creates a close-knit atmosphere, especially through the shared desert experience.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on twin-sharing. A single supplement is available.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 12. Expect a mix of culturally curious travellers, history enthusiasts, and food lovers from across the English-speaking world.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Tunisia Encompassed can be booked privately on any date. Contact our sales team.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
No minimum age is specified. The Star Wars filming locations (Ksar Hadada, Ong Jemel), desert camp, and camel experience are fantastic for older children. Contact us about a private family departure.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Most nationalities including USA, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for Tunisia for stays under 90 days. Check current requirements for your nationality on the Tunisian consulate website.
What should I pack?
Pack for varying conditions: warm Mediterranean days in the north, cool mountain nights in Ain Draham, very hot desert afternoons, and cold desert nights. Modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) is required for mosques and appreciated in medinas. Tunisia uses Type C and E plugs at 220V. If your tour includes the desert camp, all bedding is provided.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Tunisia include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. No malaria risk in Tunisia. Yellow Fever certificate is not required. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and finishes at Tunis Carthage Airport (TUN). Many low-cost carriers offer flights to Enfidha Airport (a transfer supplement applies for Enfidha arrivals). International flights are not included.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Tunisia. Suggested amounts: main guide per day, local guide per day, driver per day, porters per bag. Your guide will brief you on current norms at the start. Haggling in markets is expected: decide your value and negotiate without rushing.
Can I extend my time in Tunis?
Yes. Extra nights in Tunis before or after the tour are available at the Carlton Hotel. Contact our sales team.
Can I arrive via Enfidha Airport?
Yes. A return Enfidha Airport transfer supplement is available. Many European budget airlines serve Enfidha, making it a convenient arrival option.
How far ahead should I book?
Departures run October to May. Spring and autumn dates are popular. Book two to three months ahead for your preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Book via the Dates and Prices page on our website. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure. The tour can also be booked as a private departure on any date year-round.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, and repatriation. World Nomads is a recommended option.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of charges applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Trust My Travel financial protection covers your funds against company insolvency.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us about the waitlist, a private departure on alternative dates, or Tunisian Encounters (9 days) as a shorter alternative.

I love how this tour has a lot of free time cuz we get to see other places that wasn’t included on the tour package, but it’s totally fine. Our tour guide CheongAn is super nice, friendly, knowledgeable and so thoughtful!

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
