Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Karakorum Highlights tour?
Karakorum Highlights is our 15-day small-group journey through Pakistan's most dramatic landscapes and cultural treasures, Islamabad to Islamabad. You'll visit the sixth-largest mosque in the world (Faisal Mosque), cross Babusar Pass at 4,175m, stay in mountain huts at Fairy Meadows (3,300m) with views of Nanga Parbat (8,125m), traverse Deosai National Park at an average elevation of 3,800m, explore Hunza Valley and the 700-year-old Baltit Fort, and drive along the legendary Karakoram Highway. Nearly all meals are included (14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, 13 dinners). Maximum 16 travellers. Transport is by 4x4 jeep.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Pakistan?
Yes, and it's the ideal introduction. Karakorum Highlights covers the country's greatest natural and cultural highlights: the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza Valley, Deosai National Park, the ancient bazaar of Rawalpindi, and Islamabad's modern architecture, all with a guide and private 4x4 transport throughout.
What's the difference between this and your other Pakistan tours?
Karakorum Highlights (15 days) covers the full Karakoram route from Islamabad north to Hunza and back, with an optional Lahore extension for those who want to add Pakistan's cultural heartland. It's the definitive Pakistan expedition tour.
What's the best time of year for the Karakorum Highlights tour?
The best season is late May to early October, when the Karakoram Highway and Babusar Pass are open and the weather is clear. July and August bring some monsoon influence to lower valleys but the high-altitude sections remain good. The passes close in winter. Check departure dates on the website for currently scheduled groups.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Pakistan tours floating around. Karakorum Highlights includes almost all meals (14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, 13 dinners), 4x4 private transport throughout (the only practical way to travel on these mountain roads), guesthouse and mountain hut accommodation, specialist local guides, and access to remote areas like Fairy Meadows and Deosai that require significant logistical effort. The quality of guiding and the depth of the itinerary justify the price.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (2-4 star hotels in cities, guesthouses, and mountain huts/cabins in remote areas), all transport in 4x4 jeeps and other private vehicles, services of a local guide throughout, and meals as indicated (14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, 13 dinners). Entrance fees to national parks and sites visited are NOT specified as included; confirm at booking.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips for your guide and driver, any meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, and personal expenses. Budget for visa costs (check current Pakistan visa fees on the official immigration website) and tips. Your guide will brief current tipping amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is the Karakorum Highlights tour?
This is a moderately strenuous tour. The drives on mountain roads are long and sometimes rough. Babusar Pass at 4,175m and Deosai National Park at an average of 3,800m will cause altitude effects in some travellers. The hike to Beyal Camp from Fairy Meadows (to 3,500m) is a moderate uphill walk. You don't need to be a mountaineer, but reasonable fitness and comfort with remote, high-altitude environments are essential.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Pakistan's high altitudes are the main consideration for older travellers. The combination of altitude and long driving days requires a reasonable level of fitness and stamina. Many travellers in their 50s and 60s complete the tour without difficulty if they're fit and have no cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Consult your GP before booking if you have any concerns.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Mountain roads, hut accommodation, and the Fairy Meadows hike all require reasonable physical capability. If you have significant mobility limitations or heart or lung conditions, this tour's altitude levels require careful consideration. Contact us and consult your GP before booking.
How do you handle altitude sickness?
Babusar Pass at 4,175m is the highest point on the tour. Deosai National Park is at an average of 3,800m. Acclimatisation is built into the itinerary with gradual ascent. Your guide is experienced in monitoring altitude symptoms. Staying hydrated and ascending slowly are the key precautions. Consult your GP about acetazolamide if you have a history of altitude sensitivity.
Is Pakistan safe to visit right now?
Pakistan has a complicated international perception, but the Karakoram Highway corridor and the northern mountain regions are a well-established tourist route and are generally safe for international visitors. Our local guides and team know the region intimately. Check your government's current travel advice before booking and keep updated as the situation can change.
Is Pakistan safe for women travelling solo?
Women travel Pakistan on group tours with us. The remote mountain regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Hunza have a distinct culture that is generally very welcoming to foreign visitors, including women. Modest dress is important throughout. Having a local guide with you at all times significantly reduces any vulnerability. Solo female travellers have joined previous Karakorum Highlights departures without incident.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Remote areas have limited medical facilities. The nearest hospitals are in Gilgit and Skardu. Your guide carries basic first aid supplies and knows emergency procedures for the region. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and emergency helicopter evacuation is compulsory and particularly important at altitude. Ensure your policy covers activity up to at least 4,200m.
What happens in a medical emergency at altitude?
At Babusar Pass or Deosai, evacuation requires helicopter assistance or road descent, which can take several hours. Your guide will manage symptoms and descend immediately if any serious altitude sickness symptoms appear. Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage for altitudes above 4,000m is essential.
What's the accommodation actually like?
A genuine mix reflecting the variety of the route: 2-4 star hotels in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Skardu; simple guesthouses in Gilgit and Hunza; and mountain huts and cabins at Fairy Meadows (3,300m). The Fairy Meadows huts are basic but memorable: you're sleeping in a mountain meadow at 3,300m with Nanga Parbat (8,125m) above you. Rooms are twin or double en-suite where available.
What's the Fairy Meadows stay like?
Fairy Meadows is a mountain meadow at 3,300m reached by a short drive and hike from the main road. Accommodation is in wooden huts with basic facilities. There is no air conditioning and electricity may be limited. The landscape is extraordinary: lush meadows surrounded by forest with Nanga Parbat's 8,125m peak dominating the skyline. This is the most remote and memorable accommodation on the tour.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at hotels in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. In Hunza and Gilgit, connectivity is improving but may be patchy. At Fairy Meadows and Deosai National Park, there will be no internet access. A local Pakistani SIM with data is useful for the lower areas.
Can I upgrade accommodation on this tour?
In cities like Islamabad and Skardu, higher-category hotels may be available on request. In remote areas like Fairy Meadows, accommodation options are limited by what exists. Contact us to discuss options on a private tour version.
What kind of food will we eat?
Pakistani food is excellent and varied. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, expect rich Mughal-influenced curries, kebabs, and fresh naan from the bazaar. In the northern mountain regions, food is simpler: rice, dal, vegetable curries, and fresh chapati. The KORGAH weaving centre and the CIQAM project, both visited on the tour, support local women artisans; meals in these communities reflect local traditions.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water in Pakistan?
Stick to bottled water throughout. In remote mountain areas, stream water may appear clean but should only be consumed with a quality filter. We strongly recommend a Water-to-Go filter bottle for this tour, as bottled water availability in remote areas can be unpredictable.
Is the Karakorum Highlights tour good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group format (maximum 16) in a remote and extraordinary environment creates strong group bonds. Many solo travellers who join our Pakistan tours rate it among their most memorable experiences precisely because of the shared challenge and beauty of the landscape.
Do I have to share a room?
The price is based on two people sharing. Solo travellers can pay a single supplement for private rooms where available. Note that accommodation at Fairy Meadows and some guesthouses may have limited single room options; discuss this when booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 16 travellers. The Karakorum Highlights attracts adventurous, curious travellers with a genuine interest in exploring one of the world's most dramatic mountain regions. The group is typically varied in age and nationality.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Karakorum Highlights can run as a private departure. A Lahore extension is also available for private groups. Contact us for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The altitude, remote locations, and long driving days make this tour most appropriate for older teenagers and adults. If you're considering bringing younger children, contact us to discuss the suitability.
Do I need a visa for Pakistan?
Most nationalities can obtain a Pakistan e-Visa online before travel. Check current fees and processing times on the official Pakistan Online Visa System before booking. Some nationalities require additional approval; apply well in advance.
What should I pack?
Layering is essential: summer in Islamabad is very hot; Fairy Meadows and Deosai are cold even in summer. Warm waterproof jacket, thermal layers, good walking or trekking boots (ankle support essential), sun protection, insect repellent for lower valleys, and modest clothing for city visits (especially for women, loose-fitting clothes that cover shoulders and legs). Pakistan uses Type C, D, and G sockets at 230V.
Are any vaccinations required for Pakistan?
No vaccinations are required for entry. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are commonly recommended. Malaria prophylactics may be relevant for lower-altitude areas. Consult your GP or travel clinic for personalised advice before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. The tour starts and ends in Islamabad (ISB/IATA: ISB, Islamabad International Airport). You can arrange your own flights or ask us for suggestions.
What about tipping?
Tipping for guides and drivers is important and appreciated in Pakistan. Your guide will brief suggested amounts at the start of the tour based on current norms. Tips are entirely at your discretion and should reflect the quality of service.
Can I add a Lahore extension?
Yes. A Lahore extension is available for travellers who want to explore Pakistan's cultural capital: the Lahore Fort, the Badshahi Mosque, and the Walled City. Contact us for details.
Can I add more days in Hunza Valley?
Hunza is one of the most beautiful valleys in the world and rewards additional time. Contact us about extending the Hunza section on a private tour.
Can I visit Taxila separately?
Taxila, the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site near Rawalpindi (one of the earliest Buddhist learning centres in Asia), is included in the main itinerary. If you want more time there, contact us about extending that section.
How far ahead should I book?
Peak season (June to September) departures should be booked 3 to 6 months in advance. Book early as Pakistan tour groups have small maximums.
How does booking work?
Book online via the Dates and Prices section. Pay a deposit to secure your place. Balance due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency helicopter evacuation at altitude above 4,000m, and repatriation. We require your insurance details before the tour starts.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies based on how close to departure you cancel. Full terms in our booking conditions. We partner with Trust My Travel for financial protection.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?

I love how this tour has a lot of free time cuz we get to see other places that wasn’t included on the tour package, but it’s totally fine. Our tour guide CheongAn is super nice, friendly, knowledgeable and so thoughtful!

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

This tour stays in a mix of different accommodation, based partly on what is available in some of the remote areas we are visiting. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi we stay in a comfortable tourist class hotel (locally rated 3 or 4 star), while hotels and guesthouses are more simple and with less facilities further up the KKH. Bathrooms are en-suite in nearly all locations.
Accommodation is based on a twin-share basis, with single room supplements available if you would like to guarantee yourself a single room throughout the tour.
