Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Kenya Family Safari tour?
This 8-day safari from Nairobi to Nairobi is purpose-built for families with children. Every lodge and camp on the route runs a full-time Adventurers Club for kids aged 4-12, supervised by trained local naturalists. Travel is by 4x4 safari vehicle and internal flights to minimise long road journeys, so younger travellers stay engaged rather than exhausted. You cover Samburu National Reserve, Sweetwaters private ranch (home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary), Lake Nakuru with its flamingo-lined shores, the Great Rift Valley, and the Masai Mara with up to three game drives per day.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Kenya?
Yes, and it is particularly well designed for families visiting Africa for the first time. The lodges handle all the logistics, meals are included throughout (7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 6 dinners), and the expert safari guides explain everything in ways that resonate with children as well as adults. The Adventurers Club at each property means children are never bored between game drives.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Scheduled group departures run during the main school holiday periods, which aligns well with the prime wildlife viewing seasons. The Masai Mara is outstanding throughout the year. The Great Migration, when enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River, typically occurs between July and October. The dry seasons (January-March and July-October) offer the best game viewing. Contact us to confirm which school holiday departures are available.
How does this tour differ from a standard group safari?
Unlike standard group safaris designed for adults, every element here is calibrated for families. Lodge selection prioritises properties with dedicated children's programmes. Travel times between reserves are minimised. The internal flight from Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara on Day 6 replaces a long road journey. Groups are small with a maximum of 16 people.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Kenya safaris. But this itinerary covers four distinct reserves, uses 4 to 5-star lodges and tented camps at every stop, includes an internal flight to the Masai Mara, all game drives, all safari park entrance fees, 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 6 dinners, and the Adventurers Club programme at each property. Matching that standard independently for a family requires significant research and expense.
What is actually included in the price?
All accommodation, all transport and transfers, the internal flight from Naivasha to the Masai Mara, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service, English-speaking professional safari guides, sightseeing tours and safaris as per itinerary, entrance and admission fees including all safari park entrances, 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 6 dinners.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, optional excursions and activities, drinks, snacks, tips and personal expenses. Tipping your safari guide at the end of the tour is customary. Your guide will advise on current expected amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your place with a deposit, hold a reservation and pay later, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a low to moderate physical activity tour. Game drives are done seated in a 4x4 with an open roof, and most walking is between vehicles and lodges. Some optional activities at lodges, such as guided nature walks or camel treks at Sweetwaters, require a bit more energy. The roads between reserves can be bumpy, which can be uncomfortable for anyone with a bad back.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This tour is very comfortable for older travellers. The lodges are luxurious, meals are all provided, and the game drives are conducted from vehicles. The internal flight on Day 6 eliminates the longest road journey. The main consideration is that bumpy bush roads can jar, so anyone with back or joint problems should keep that in mind.
What if I have mobility issues?
The lodges are accessible at ground level or via short ramps in most cases, and game drives are vehicle-based. The Adventurers Club activities for children are on-ground. If you have specific mobility requirements, contact us before booking so we can check accessibility at each lodge.
Is Kenya safe to visit?
Kenya is one of Africa's most popular safari destinations and the parks on this itinerary, including Samburu, Sweetwaters, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara, are well-managed tourist areas with a strong safety record. Professional safari guides escort the group at all times in wildlife areas. Check current government travel advisories before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Kenya Family Safari groups welcome solo travellers of all genders. The lodge environment is structured and secure, with professional guides and camp staff. Solo women travelling with their children or joining the group alone are a regular part of these departures.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
All lodges on this tour are staffed and can arrange emergency medical assistance. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is within reach of the Nairobi Serena Hotel at the start and end of the tour. You must carry comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover. World Nomads is our recommended provider.
Do I need to worry about malaria?
Kenya has malaria risk in certain areas, including the Masai Mara. Consult your GP or travel clinic about malaria prophylactics before departure. Use insect repellent on exposed skin, wear long sleeves and trousers at dusk, and sleep under a mosquito net where provided. The lodges on this tour are equipped accordingly.
What is the accommodation actually like?
All properties are 4 to 5-star. You start and end at the Nairobi Serena Hotel, a full-service hotel with pool, spa and fine-dining restaurant. Samburu Intrepids Club puts you in stilted luxury tents with wooden decking over the Uaso Nyiro River and includes the Adventurers Club for children. Sweetwaters Serena Camp features 39 luxury tents each with a private veranda overlooking a waterhole. Great Rift Valley Lodge at Lake Naivasha has panoramic views, a pool and both an Adventurer's Club and a Young Rangers Club. Mara Intrepids Club faces the Talek River and includes 3 game drives per day in the rate.
What is the Adventurers Club like?
Each lodge runs a full-time children's educational and entertainment programme called the Adventurers Club, for children aged 4-12. Activities are led by trained local naturalists and include bow and arrow lessons, beaded jewellery making, footprint tracking, obstacle courses, animal identification and visits to Maasai villages. At Sweetwaters there is also a dedicated children's pool.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at the Nairobi Serena Hotel. In the national parks and reserves Wi-Fi is limited or absent at some tented camps. The experience of being genuinely off-grid in the bush is part of the appeal, and most families find it refreshing.
Can I upgrade?
The tour can be booked on a private basis with customised accommodation options. Extra nights in Nairobi before or after the tour are available. Contact us for a tailored quotation.
What kind of food will we eat?
Lodge dining is of a high standard throughout. Sweetwaters' Rhino Restaurant serves both regional and international cuisine. Mara Intrepids offers bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the open air. Food is buffet-style at most lodges with a mix of Kenyan and international dishes. A high proportion of meals (7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 6 dinners) are included.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled or filtered water in Kenya. Do not drink tap water. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good investment for reducing plastic waste (code ENCOUNTERS25 for a discount). All lodges provide bottled water.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes, though the tour is designed primarily for families. Solo travellers are welcome and will find themselves with a mixed group. A single supplement is available.
Do I have to share a room?
Rooms are based on twin or double sharing. A single supplement is available. Family tents at Samburu Intrepids consist of two tents joined together with a shared living area, which works perfectly for families with children.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 3, maximum 16. As a family-oriented tour, you will mostly be travelling with other families with children, though adults travelling without children are also welcome.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on the same school holiday dates or at other times of year. A private booking lets you set the pace and customise the lodge selection. Contact us for pricing.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
This is the tour most explicitly designed for kids. The Adventurers Club caters to children aged 4-12. Children under 15 may benefit from a discounted price on some departures. The safari parks, open-top game drives, lodge pools and naturalist-led activities keep children genuinely engaged throughout.
Do I need a visa for Kenya?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa to Kenya. Check current requirements and whether an e-Visa is available for your nationality on the official Kenya eCitizen portal. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date.
What should I pack?
Dull-coloured safari clothing in olive, khaki, mushroom or stone tones (avoid white, black, blue or camouflage). Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers for evening mosquito protection. A fleece or jacket for early-morning game drives, which can be cool. Sunhat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Camera with a zoom lens. Binoculars. Power adaptors for Kenya (three rectangular-pronged British-style plugs, 220V). A swimsuit for lodge pools.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Kenya include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Tetanus and Typhoid. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is present. Malaria prophylactics are strongly recommended. Consult your GP or travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into and out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. We include 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers. We can suggest flight options if you ask.
What about tipping?
Tipping the safari guide is customary at the end of the tour. Your guide will advise on typical amounts at the start. Lodge staff at reception may also appreciate a small tip for exceptional service.
Can I add a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara?
Yes. Hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara can be organised locally at Mara Intrepids Club. This is a spectacular optional extra, particularly at sunrise. Ask your guide or the camp reception on arrival.
Can I add extra days in Nairobi?
Yes. Additional nights at the Nairobi Serena Hotel before or after the tour are available. Nairobi Serena is also within easy reach of Nairobi National Park, which can be done on a half-day game drive.
Can I do a night game drive at Sweetwaters?
A night game drive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp is an optional extra payable locally on Day 4. It is a great way to see different wildlife that only emerges after dark.
How far ahead should I book?
School holiday departures are popular and fill early. Booking 3-6 months ahead is advisable for peak holiday periods. Private departures can be arranged at shorter notice.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the tour's Dates & Prices page. Pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You receive instant confirmation and full joining instructions by email.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. If you plan to take optional activities such as hot air ballooning, check that your policy covers these. World Nomads is our recommended provider.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies depending on how far ahead you cancel. Full terms are in the booking conditions on our website. We are UK-registered and financial protection is provided through our partnership with Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Join the waitlist for your preferred departure or contact us about a private departure on alternative school holiday dates. We can also advise on other Kenya tours if this one does not fit your schedule.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
