You will venture first to Chebika, often called the 'Castle of the Sun', where crystal-clear springs cascade into natural pools amidst steep ravines. The journey continues to Tamaghza, the largest of the mountain oases known for its tumbling waterfalls and abandoned old village, and finally to Mides, famous for its dramatic canyon that offers breathtaking views over the rugged landscape. In the afternoon, the pace quickens with an exhilarating off-road 4x4 expedition to Ong Jmal, named for a prominent rock formation resembling a camel's neck. Entering through the historic Bab el Bhar (Sea Gate), you will step into a sprawling labyrinth of covered alleyways, bustling souks, and hidden courtyards. This living monument offers a sensory overload of scents and sounds, where you can observe artisans crafting copperware, leather, and perfumes much as they have for centuries, all surrounding the majestic Zitouna Mosque. The afternoon is dedicated to the picturesque coastal village of Sidi Bou Said, perched high atop a cliff overlooking the azure Gulf of Tunis. Famous for its harmonious blue-and-white architecture, this artistic haven offers a tranquil contrast to the city's energy. Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 tour?
This 9-day tour pairs one of astronomy's most extraordinary events, up to 5 minutes 39 seconds of total solar eclipse totality from Chaffar Beach near Sfax, with a rich journey through Tunisia's ancient history, Saharan landscape and Star Wars filming locations. You visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Carthage and El Jem's Roman Amphitheatre (which once seated 35,000 spectators), explore the Sahara Desert from Douz, sleep near the hotel that served as the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars, and drive 4x4 to the Mos Espa film set. Monument entrance fees are included throughout.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Tunisia?
Yes. The itinerary gives you an efficient and well-rounded introduction to Tunisia, covering its Mediterranean coast, Saharan south, Roman and Islamic heritage, and modern capital. The group has a minimum of 10, so you will be travelling with a sociable group of fellow eclipse chasers.
What is the difference between this and your other eclipse tours?
Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 offers up to 5 minutes 39 seconds of totality from Chaffar Beach in northern Africa, combined with the unique experience of exploring ancient Rome, the Sahara and actual Star Wars filming locations. Egypt Eclipse Adventure 2027 (11 days) offers over 6 minutes of totality from Luxor on a 5-star Nile cruise. Morocco Eclipse Adventure (11 days) is a third option on the path. Choose based on the ancillary travel experience you most want: Star Wars and Sahara in Tunisia, Pharaohs and Nile in Egypt, or the Atlas and Atlantic coast in Morocco.
What is the best time of year to travel to Tunisia?
This tour is specifically timed around the eclipse on a fixed departure date. Generally, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for visiting Tunisia's interior and Sahara. Summer temperatures in the south are extreme. The eclipse period falls in spring conditions across the region.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Tunisia tours. But this tour is built around a once-in-a-generation astronomical event. Securing accommodation on the eclipse path, including the iconic Star Wars hotel Sidi Idriss in Matmata, requires contracts placed years ahead at premium rates. Monument entrance fees throughout are included, eliminating constant additional costs at each site. The group minimum of 10 means every departure runs with a genuine group experience.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (El Mouradi Gammarth Tunis, Ibis Hotel Sfax, Hotel Sahara Douz, Palm Beach Palace Tozeur), all transport and transfers, monument entrance fees to all included sites, meals as listed (8 breakfasts, 3 dinners), services of a tour leader throughout, and access to the Chaffar Beach eclipse viewing site.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, lunches (most days), drinks and personal expenses, tips for guide and driver, and any optional activities are not included. The majority of days have no included lunch, so budget for daily lunch costs. Your guide will brief current tipping norms at the start of the tour.
What is the deposit and payment schedule?
Due to the eclipse-specific accommodation contracts, the payment structure differs from our standard tours. An initial deposit is required at booking. An interim payment is due by 31 July 2026. The balance is due by 31 January 2027. Full details are provided at the time of booking.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, within the structured schedule: initial deposit at booking, interim payment by 31 July 2026, and balance by 31 January 2027.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a comfortable touring holiday. Days involve driving between destinations in a minibus and guided sightseeing on foot at historical sites. The El Jem amphitheatre and Carthage involve some walking on uneven ancient surfaces. The 4x4 trip to the Mos Espa film set in the desert involves off-road driving. No significant hiking or strenuous activity.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Tunisia Eclipse Explorer is very accessible for mature travellers. The pace is relaxed, the accommodation is good quality, and the activities are guided rather than strenuous. Many eclipse chasers are mature travellers.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Some sites have cobblestones, steps and uneven surfaces. The El Jem amphitheatre involves climbing internal staircases to reach the upper seating areas. If you have specific mobility concerns, contact us before booking to discuss which parts of the itinerary may need adaptation.
Is Tunisia safe to visit?
Tunisia's main tourist areas and the route covered by this tour are regularly visited by international travellers. We monitor official government travel advisories continuously. Your guide has local knowledge and experience operating in Tunisia. Check your government's current advice before booking.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Tunisia is a relatively liberal North African country and is generally safe for solo women travellers on guided tours. Dress modestly outside of the beach resorts. The group format provides a secure and sociable environment.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide carries a first aid kit. Tunis and Sfax have hospitals and clinics. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation.
What if the eclipse is clouded out?
Eclipse viewing is weather-dependent. The Chaffar Beach area near Sfax has a high probability of clear skies based on historical data for the eclipse date, but cloud cannot be guaranteed. The tour itinerary does not change if weather affects the eclipse. Eclipse glasses and the full guided experience are included regardless of conditions. Your guide will position the group for the best available viewing.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay at El Mouradi Gammarth in Tunis, an established hotel on the northern coast near Sidi Bou Said. In Sfax, the Ibis Hotel provides clean and reliable accommodation. Hotel Sahara in Douz is a desert hotel with pool. Palm Beach Palace in Tozeur is a palm-garden resort near the Chott el-Jerid. Properties range from 3 to 4 stars, comfortable and well-located throughout.
What is the Star Wars hotel like?
Sidi Idriss Hotel in Matmata is the real-world location used as the interior of Luke Skywalker's childhood home in Star Wars. It is a traditional troglodyte guesthouse carved into the earth, cool in summer, atmospheric at all times, and unmistakably the location film fans will recognise. Rooms are basic and unique. It is an experience, not a luxury stay.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Tunis, Sfax and Tozeur have Wi-Fi. Remote areas including Matmata and parts of the Sahara south have limited connectivity. Plan to disconnect for those sections.
Can I upgrade or add extra nights?
Extra nights in Tunis before or after the tour are available as a paid option. A single room supplement is available for solo travellers who want their own room throughout. Contact us for details.
What kind of food will we eat?
Tunisian cuisine blends Arab, Berber, French and Mediterranean influences. Expect couscous with vegetables or lamb, brik (crispy pastry filled with egg), harissa-spiced dishes, fresh tuna salads, dates in the south and strong mint tea. Wine tasting in Grombalia introduces Tunisia's wine-growing region. The Bardo Museum visit in Tunis is paired with Roman history but the local food nearby is very much Mediterranean.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in Tunisia. Bottled water is widely available. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic waste.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The group minimum of 10 ensures you always travel with a proper group. Eclipse experiences are inherently sociable and the shared anticipation and excitement of the event creates strong connections within the group.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on twin share. A single supplement is available if you want your own room throughout the tour.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The group has a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 travellers. Expect a mix of Star Wars fans, astronomy enthusiasts, Roman history buffs and travellers for whom the eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime priority.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Private departures can be arranged. Contact us for details on minimum numbers and customisation options around the eclipse date.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The tour does not have a specified minimum age, but the historical site visits, driving days and eclipse event make it more suited to teenagers and adults. Contact us if you are considering bringing younger children.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Most Western nationalities do not require a visa for short stays in Tunisia. Check current requirements on the Tunisian embassy website for your nationality before booking.
What should I pack?
Lightweight clothing suitable for warm days and cooler desert nights, a light jacket for air-conditioned interiors, modest dress for mosque visits (including the Kairouan Great Mosque, which requires shoulders and knees to be covered for women and respectful dress for all), comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Eclipse glasses are provided.
Are any vaccinations required?
Consult your GP or travel clinic for current recommendations. Generally recommended for Tunisia: Hepatitis A, Typhoid and up-to-date routine vaccinations. No Yellow Fever certificate is required unless arriving from an endemic country.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN). Airport transfers on arrival and departure are included. We can help with flight suggestions on request. Note that Enfidha Airport Transfer Supplement is available as an option if you fly via Enfidha instead.
What about tipping?
Tipping is customary in Tunisia for guides and drivers. Your guide will brief the group on current norms at the start of the tour.
Can I add the Tunisia Eclipse Extension?
Yes. The Tunisia Eclipse Extension (5 days) is available as a standalone or add-on, extending your time in Tunisia beyond the main tour itinerary. Contact us for details.
Can I add a camel ride or quad bike in the Sahara?
Yes. Camel rides and quad bike excursions in the Douz area of the Sahara are available as paid optional activities and can be arranged locally or in advance.
Can I combine this with Egypt for the eclipse?
The eclipse path crosses both Tunisia and Egypt. If you want to compare the two experiences, contact us about travelling on Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 in combination with other touring. Egypt Eclipse Adventure 2027 (C) is also available as an 11-day option. Note that the eclipse occurs on a single day and the two tours are not normally combined.
Can I add extra nights in Tunis?
Yes. Extra nights in Tunis before or after the tour are available as a paid option. Tunis has excellent restaurants, the Medina (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and proximity to Sidi Bou Said and Carthage for further exploration.
How far ahead should I book?
Eclipse tours on the totality path fill up years in advance. Book as early as possible, ideally well over a year ahead of the eclipse date.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form and pay an initial deposit to secure your place. Subsequent payments are due by 31 July 2026 and 31 January 2027. Full booking instructions are sent on confirmation.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, repatriation and cancellation. Given the structured non-refundable payment schedule for this tour, cancellation cover is particularly important. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance.
What is your cancellation policy?
The payment structure for this eclipse tour includes non-refundable elements due to the accommodation contracts required to secure places on the totality path. A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies to the balance payments. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Funds are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
If Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 is full, our Egypt Eclipse Adventure 2027 (11 days) offers over 6 minutes of totality from Luxor on a 5-star Nile cruise. Morocco Eclipse Adventure (11 days) is a third option. Contact us to check current availability across all eclipse tours.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
