DAY 1

The Olive Route & Roman Ruins of Dougga

Day 1 Lunch,Dinner
Your journey begins with a departure from Tunis towards the verdant countryside of Mjez El Beb. Your first stop is the renowned Domaine Ben Ismail, where you will enjoy a refined olive oil tasting experience. Discover the secrets of producing high-quality extra-virgin olive oil during a guided tour, followed by a tasting of various distinct varieties. Lunch is a traditional affair served on the estate, showcasing local flavours and the farm's own oil. In the afternoon, travel back in time at the archaeological site of Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Considered one of the best-preserved Roman cities in North Africa, you will stroll through majestic ruins including the theatre, Capitol, temples, and ancient baths, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills. The day concludes with a scenic drive to El Kef for your overnight stay.

Activities

  • Olive Estate Take part in an olive oil tasting at a local estate, learning how the oil is produced and how to recognise its flavours. Enjoy a simple farm-to-table Tunisian lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients.
  • Visit Archaeological Site of Dougga Discover Dougga, one of North Africa's best-preserved Roman towns and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The morning is given over to its extensive ruins, including the Capitol, the large Theatre and the Libyco-Punic Mausoleum, alongside the temples and paved streets that reveal how a Roman provincial city actually worked.
The Olive Route & Roman Ruins of Dougga
DAY 2

Exploration of El Kef Medina, Bread Making Workshop & visit to Bulla Regia

Day 2 Breakfast,Dinner
The day includes El Kef Medina, the bread-making workshop at Dar El Oula, Bulla Regia and onward travel to Ain Draham. The workshop includes preparing, baking and tasting traditional bread. At Bulla Regia, the source specifically notes underground villas and mosaics. No additional El Kef monuments or Ain Draham activities are stated, so the programme should end with arrival for the overnight.

Activities

  • El Kef Medina Wander through the old medina of El Kef with its narrow streets and traditional houses. Enjoy the calm atmosphere and views over the surrounding countryside from this historic town.
  • Visit Dar el Khobz Bread Experience – El Kef Visit Dar el Khobz, the “House of Bread”, to learn about regional Tunisian breads. Take part in a demonstration and taste freshly baked loaves that are central to local cuisine.
  • Bulla Regia Archaeological Site Explore the Roman ruins of Bulla Regia, famous for its underground houses built to escape the summer heat. Walk through courtyards, mosaics and vaulted rooms that show how people once lived here.
Exploration of El Kef Medina, Bread Making Workshop & visit to Bulla Regia
DAY 3

Coastal Tabarka - Visit the 'Les Aiguilles' rock formations and join local fishermen for a fishing excursion

Day 3 Breakfast,Lunch
The day includes Les Aiguilles, time around Tabarka harbour, a fishing excursion with local fishermen and lunch with a local family. The source mentions the Genoese Fort as part of Tabarka’s setting but does not clearly state an interior visit, so one should not be invented. After the coastal activities, travel back to Ain Draham. Fishing conditions depend on the sea, although the excursion is presented as included.

Activities

  • Tabarka Roman Fort Explore the Roman, later Genoese, fort that dominates the entrance to Tabarka’s harbour. Walk around its ramparts for sweeping views where green hills meet the blue waters of the Mediterranean.
  • Tabarka → Ain Draham Leave the coast behind and drive into the Kroumirie Mountains toward Ain Draham. The road climbs through dense forests and cool highland scenery.
Coastal Tabarka - Visit the 'Les Aiguilles' rock formations and join local fishermen for a fishing excursion
DAY 4

Ancestral Arts with the Women of Sejnane. Visit the coastal city of Bizerte

Day 4 Breakfast
Time in Sejnane centres on a hands-on pottery workshop with local artisans who demonstrate traditional clay-working techniques. Afterwards, continue to the coastal city of Bizerte and spend time around the Old Port, medina and Spanish Fort. The day combines community craft traditions with historic urban surroundings before the road journey back to Tunis.

Activities

  • Sejnane Join a hands-on pottery workshop with the women of Sejnane, learning ancient techniques used to shape and decorate clay by hand. Discover why this craft is recognised by UNESCO as an important part of Tunisia’s cultural heritage.
Ancestral Arts with the Women of Sejnane. Visit the coastal city of Bizerte

At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport for your onward flight and bring the organised Tunisia programme to an end. Travellers wishing to remain longer can arrange a separate beach extension through the sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Tunisia Eclipse Extension?
The Tunisia Eclipse Extension is a 5-day post-tour add-on that takes you into the green, little-visited north of Tunisia after the eclipse. It combines the UNESCO-listed Roman ruins of Dougga, considered the best-preserved in North Africa, and the underground villas of Bulla Regia with a series of hands-on cultural experiences: an olive oil tasting at Domaine Ben Ismail, a bread-making workshop in El Kef, a fishing excursion and family lunch in Tabarka, and a UNESCO-recognised pottery workshop with the women of Sejnane. It starts and ends in Tunis and runs with 6 to 20 travellers.
Which tours does this extension attach to?
This extension has been specifically arranged as a post-tour extension to our Tunisia Eclipse Adventure and Tunisia Eclipse Explorer packages. Two departures are scheduled, 4 to 8 August 2027 and 8 to 12 August 2027, timed to coincide with the end of those two tours so you can carry straight on from Tunis without a gap.
How does the extension work if I am coming off one of the eclipse tours?
You finish your main eclipse tour in Tunis and the extension departs from Tunis on Day 1, so no arrival airport transfer is needed. The extension then loops through El Kef, Ain Draham, Tabarka, Sejnane and Bizerte before returning you to Tunis on Day 4 for your final night. On Day 5 your time is free until we collect you from your hotel and transfer you to the airport.
What is the day-by-day route?
Day 1: Tunis to Domaine Ben Ismail for an olive oil tasting and lunch, then the Roman city of Dougga, overnight El Kef. Day 2: El Kef medina and bread-making workshop at Dar El Oula, then the underground villas of Bulla Regia, overnight Ain Draham. Day 3: coastal Tabarka, the Les Aiguilles rock formations and Genoese Fort, a fishing excursion with local fishermen and lunch with a local family, back to Ain Draham. Day 4: pottery workshop in Sejnane, then Bizerte's Old Port and Spanish Fort, overnight Tunis. Day 5: free time and airport transfer.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are 4 nights accommodation at your chosen level, all transport and transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, a 24-hour airport departure transfer, the services of a local tour guide for all sightseeing, monument entrance fees, meals as indicated in the itinerary, the pottery workshop in Sejnane, the olive oil tasting with lunch at Domaine Ben Ismail, lunch with a local family in Tabarka, the bread-making workshop in El Kef and the fishing experience in Tabarka.
What is not included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are international flights, an arrival airport transfer (not required if you are joining as an extension), visa fees, compulsory travel insurance, meals not indicated in the itinerary, drinks, snacks and personal expenses such as laundry, tipping and any hotel gala dinners. Your guide will brief current tipping amounts at the start of the extension.
How much does the extension cost?
Prices are shown on the Dates and Prices tab in your currency. As a guide, the Standard Hotels level is listed at GBP 1199 or US$1690 per person and the Deluxe Hotels level at GBP 1299 or US$1830 per person, based on two people sharing. Both departures, 4 to 8 August and 8 to 12 August 2027, are priced the same.
Is there a single room supplement?
Yes. Pricing is based on twin or double sharing, and a single room supplement is available if you want your own room. If you are travelling solo and happy to share, we will try to match you with another same-sex traveller. Check the Single Room Supplement option on the tour page for details.
How physically demanding is the extension?
This is an easy to moderate cultural tour. You walk through the ruins at Dougga and Bulla Regia, which have uneven ground and steps, and wander the medinas of El Kef and Bizerte. The workshops and tastings are relaxed and seated for much of the time. No special fitness is required.
What does the fishing excursion in Tabarka involve?
On Day 3 you join local fishermen at sea to learn traditional techniques and see their daily working life. It is an authentic small-boat experience rather than a sport fishing trip, and it is followed by lunch hosted by a local family in Tabarka. Let us know at booking if you have concerns about being on the water.
Do I actually take part in the workshops?
Yes. These are hands-on experiences. At Dar El Oula in El Kef you prepare and bake bread using ancestral techniques and then taste your own loaf. In Sejnane you hand-shape a piece of natural clay pottery under the guidance of the local women, whose craft is recognised by UNESCO for its intangible heritage value.
Is northern Tunisia safe to visit?
The route covered by this extension is visited regularly by international travellers and you are accompanied by a local guide with experience operating in the region. We monitor official government travel advice continuously. Check your own government's current advice before booking.
Is travel insurance compulsory?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours and must cover personal accident and liability, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and travel delay. Cancellation cover is strongly recommended, especially given the non-refundable payment structure on this tour. World Nomads Travel Insurance is a good option.
What financial protection covers my booking?
Encounters Travel is a UK-registered company and all customer funds are protected through Trust My Travel's insurance policy. In the event of insolvency you would be refunded for unfulfilled services or repatriated to the UK where applicable.
Could the hotels or itinerary change?
The itinerary and hotels listed represent our current plans. Because of the exceptional demand around the eclipse dates, we have confirmed allocations at the hotels listed but may use alternative hotels of an equivalent standard should the need arise. The specific hotels are subject to change.
What accommodation levels are offered?
You choose one of two levels. Standard level uses 3 to 4-star hotels and guesthouses: Dar Alyssa Guesthouse in El Kef, Dar Monia Guesthouse in Ain Draham and the Carlton Hotel in Tunis. Deluxe level uses 5-star hotels: Tej Medina Hotel in El Kef, La Foret Hotel in Ain Draham and the Radisson Blu Hotel in Tunis. Everyone travels together as one group whichever level you book.
Where do we stay each night?
Night 1 is in El Kef, nights 2 and 3 are in Ain Draham in the Kroumirie mountains, and night 4 is in Tunis. Rooms are twin, triple or double en-suite with air conditioning, and all couples are given a private double room.
Can I stay in the deluxe hotels while my travel companion stays in standard?
The two accommodation levels travel as a single group during the day but sleep in different hotels, so companions who want to share a room need to book the same level. Contact the sales team if you have a mixed party and want to discuss options.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is generally available at the hotels used, but connections in the mountain town of Ain Draham and in smaller guesthouses can be slower and less reliable than in Tunis. Treat it as a convenience rather than a guarantee.
Which meals are included?
Meals are included as indicated in the itinerary. The highlights are a traditional lunch on the estate at Domaine Ben Ismail on Day 1, showcasing the farm's own olive oil, and a home-cooked lunch hosted by a local family in Tabarka on Day 3. You also taste the bread you bake in El Kef on Day 2. Meals not indicated in the itinerary are at your own expense.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diets?
Please tell us about any dietary requirements when you book. We are always willing to look at them and, where possible, we will do our best to accommodate you, although we cannot guarantee that every restaurant, hotel or boat on the route will be able to meet every need. Your guide will also help you find suitable options along the way.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not recommended for drinking in Tunisia. Use bottled water or a Water-to-Go filter bottle, which avoids relying on single-use plastic throughout the trip.
Is this extension good for solo travellers?
Yes. Most people on the extension have just shared the eclipse experience on the Adventure or Explorer tour, so the group already has a sociable dynamic, and the workshops and family lunch are naturally communal. We will try to match solo travellers with a same-sex room-share partner; otherwise the single supplement applies.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on twin or double sharing. If you are travelling alone you can either request a same-sex room share, which we will try to arrange, or pay the single room supplement for your own room throughout.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Departures are guaranteed to run with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 20 travellers. Expect a mix of nationalities and ages drawn from our two Tunisia eclipse tours, united by an interest in Roman history, crafts and authentic local encounters rather than beach resorts.
Can I book the extension without doing one of the eclipse tours?
The extension is designed and scheduled as a post-tour add-on to the Tunisia Eclipse Adventure and Tunisia Eclipse Explorer, and the departure dates are fixed to match those tours. If you would like to join only the extension, contact the sales team to check availability; note that the arrival airport transfer is not included.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
No minimum age is specified. The bread-making, pottery and fishing experiences appeal to older children and teenagers, but there are long driving days and archaeological site visits. Contact us to discuss if you are considering bringing younger children.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Most nationalities, including UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not need a visa for Tunisia for stays under 90 days. Requirements can change, so check with your nearest Tunisian consulate before travel.
Where does the extension start and finish?
The extension starts and finishes in Tunis. It departs from Tunis on the morning of Day 1 and ends with a hotel to airport transfer on Day 5. A 24-hour airport departure transfer service is included, so you can book any flight time on your final day.
What should I pack?
Pack lightweight, modest clothing for the medinas, comfortable walking shoes for the ruins at Dougga and Bulla Regia, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Ain Draham sits in the pine-forested Kroumirie mountains and is noticeably cooler than the coast, so bring a light jacket for the evenings. Clothes you do not mind getting floury or clay-stained are useful for the workshops.
What currency is used and how should I manage money?
The local currency is the Tunisian Dinar. Bring some hard currency such as US dollars, euros or GB pounds plus a reliable ATM card. Outside Tunis, ATMs that accept foreign cards can be scarce, so carry enough cash for the El Kef and Ain Draham days. Budget for drinks, snacks, tips and souvenirs such as Sejnane pottery.
What about tipping?
Tipping is customary in Tunisia for guides, drivers and the hosts of the workshops and lunches. It is not included in the price. Your guide will brief the group on current amounts at the start of the extension.
Can I upgrade to the deluxe hotels?
Yes. Simply select the Deluxe Hotels option when booking. You then stay at the Tej Medina Hotel in El Kef, La Foret Hotel in Ain Draham and the Radisson Blu Hotel in Tunis while following the same itinerary as the standard group.
Can I extend my stay in Tunisia after Day 5?
Yes. If you would like more time in Tunisia after the extension, speak to our sales team who can assist with beach extensions. Airport transfers are included on extra nights booked through us.
What other eclipse tours might I combine this with?
This extension is built around the Tunisia Eclipse Adventure (Deluxe) and Tunisia Eclipse Explorer. Our Egypt Eclipse Adventure 2027 (B) is also offered as a related tour for travellers considering a different vantage point on the same eclipse. Contact the sales team to compare options.
How do I book?
Book via the Dates and Prices tab on the tour page, choosing your departure (4 to 8 August or 8 to 12 August 2027) and your accommodation level. If you are already booked on the Tunisia Eclipse Adventure or Explorer, mention this so we can link the bookings and confirm your transfer arrangements.
What are the deposit and payment terms for this tour?
Due to stricter cancellation and deposit rules imposed by accommodations over the eclipse period, our standard deposit policy does not apply. An initial non-refundable deposit of GBP 250 or US$350 per person (or equivalent in your currency) is due at booking, an interim non-refundable deposit of GBP 250 or US$350 per person is due on 31 December 2026, and the balance is due on 31 March 2027 and is non-refundable after payment.
What is your cancellation policy?
Because of the accommodation contracts required for the eclipse period, the initial deposit, interim deposit and final balance are each non-refundable once paid. Full terms are set out in our booking conditions and confirmed at booking. Your funds are protected through Trust My Travel, and we strongly recommend cancellation cover on your travel insurance.
How far ahead should I book?
Eclipse period accommodation across Tunisia is in unprecedented demand and both extension departures cap at 20 travellers. Book as early as possible, ideally at the same time as your main eclipse tour, to secure your preferred accommodation level.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies and repatriation, and given the non-refundable payment schedule it should also cover cancellation. You will need to provide policy details before departure.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
