Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Tunisia Eclipse Adventure 2027 - Deluxe B tour?
This 10-day small-group tour pairs the 2027 total solar eclipse, viewed from the island of Djerba on 2 August with roughly 4 minutes and 10 seconds of totality, with a deluxe journey through Tunisia's Roman, Islamic and Berber heritage. You visit the El Jem amphitheatre, the UNESCO medina and Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Tozeur oasis, the Star Wars sets at Ong Jemel, the Chott el-Jerid salt lake, Douz, the troglodyte houses of Matmata, Djerba's museums and street art, and finish with a cooking class in the Tunis medina and the ruins of Carthage, staying in 5-star hotels throughout.
What is the centrepiece of this tour and why is Djerba special?
The centrepiece is the total solar eclipse on Monday 2 August 2027, viewed from a specially selected prime location on the island of Djerba, which sits within the path of totality. The partial eclipse begins in the morning, with totality at approximately 10:10 AM local time lasting roughly 4 minutes and 10 seconds. The viewing site is chosen to be comfortable and secure, with shaded areas, complimentary refreshments and facilities.
How does Deluxe B differ from the Tunisia Eclipse Adventure Deluxe A tour?
Both are 5-star Tunisia eclipse tours starting and ending in Tunis, but Deluxe B is 10 days and views the eclipse from the island of Djerba, with two full days exploring Djerba and a domestic flight back to Tunis on day 9. Deluxe A is 9 days and views the eclipse from Chaffar Beach near Sfax, returning to Tunis overland via El Jem. Deluxe B also places the Tunis cooking class and Carthage at the end of the trip rather than the start.
What other eclipse tours do you offer if this one is full?
If you are drawn to North Africa, our Morocco Eclipse Adventure follows the same 2027 eclipse. For the Land of the Pharaohs, the Egypt Eclipse Adventure (C) has been planned for optimal viewing from Egypt. If you have extra time, the 5-day Tunisia Eclipse Extension runs immediately after this tour and takes you to the green north of Tunisia. Contact us to check current availability across all eclipse departures.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are 9 nights of deluxe-level accommodation, a day dedicated to witnessing the 2027 eclipse on Djerba, all transport and transfers by air-conditioned minibus, a 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service, the Djerba to Tunis domestic flight on day 9, the services of a local tour guide for all sightseeing, monument entrance fees, and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, compulsory travel insurance, meals not indicated in the itinerary, drinks, snacks and other personal expenses such as laundry, and tipping are not included. Your guide will brief current tipping norms and typical daily costs at the start of the tour.
What are the special deposit rules for this tour?
Because hotels impose stricter deposit and cancellation rules over the eclipse period, our standard deposit policy does not apply. An initial non-refundable deposit of GBP 800 or US$ 1100 per person (or equivalent in your currency) is due at booking, an interim non-refundable deposit of GBP 1000 or US$ 1350 per person is due on 31 October 2026, and the balance is due by 31 March 2027 and is non-refundable after payment. The exact amount in your chosen currency is shown during the online booking process.
Is this tour good value compared with booking independently?
The eclipse dates are in exceptional demand and accommodation on Djerba and across southern Tunisia has very limited availability. We hold confirmed allocations at 5-star hotels, a domestic flight on day 9, a guide throughout and all monument entrance fees, so the price bundles the scarce elements that are hardest to secure on your own.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. Most days involve gentle walking around archaeological sites, medinas and museums. The most active section is the 4x4 excursion from Tozeur on day 4, which includes hiking through the canyons and palm groves of the Chebika, Tamerza and Mides mountain oases. Eclipse day itself is relaxed, with shaded areas and refreshments at the viewing site.
What if I am older than the rest of the group or have mobility concerns?
Eclipse chasers are often mature travellers and the pace is relaxed, with 5-star hotels providing a comfortable base each night. Some sites have uneven ground and steps, notably El Jem, the troglodyte houses of Matmata and the mountain oases. If you have specific mobility or medical concerns, contact us before booking so we can advise.
How hot will it be and how should I manage the sun on eclipse day?
The eclipse takes place in early August with totality at around 10:10 AM, so the sun is already high and southern Tunisia is at its hottest. The viewing site has shaded areas and complimentary refreshments. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and light protective clothing for the wait before totality, and drink plenty of water throughout the desert days.
Is Tunisia safe to visit?
Tunisia is a long-established tourism destination and this itinerary follows well-travelled routes between Tunis, Kairouan, Tozeur, Douz, Matmata and Djerba. You travel with a local guide throughout and stay in 5-star hotels. Check current UK Foreign Office travel advice before you travel.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide carries a first aid kit and has local contacts. Tunis and the larger towns on the route have hospitals and clinics. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation.
What happens if the eclipse day arrangements or hotels change?
The itinerary and hotels represent our current plans, but the popularity of the eclipse may lead local authorities to introduce specific controls over the eclipse days, so exact eclipse day arrangements will be finalised closer to departure. We have confirmed allocations at the hotels listed but, given the unprecedented demand, may use alternative hotels of an equivalent 5-star standard if needed.
How is my money protected?
Encounters Travel is a UK-registered company and all customer funds are protected through Trust My Travel's insurance policy. If we were to become insolvent you would be refunded for unfulfilled services or repatriated where applicable.
What is the accommodation actually like?
All 9 nights are in deluxe 5-star hotels, with nights in Tunis, Kairouan, Tozeur (2), Douz, Djerba (3) and Tunis again. The Residence Tunis is an example of the standard you can expect, and the specific properties used are listed in the accommodation section of the tour page, subject to change. On Djerba you stay at a premier seaside resort on the Mediterranean.
Will couples get a double room?
Yes. All couples are given a private double room. Accommodation is based on twin, triple or double en-suite rooms with air conditioning.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The 5-star hotels used on this tour normally offer Wi-Fi. Connections in the desert towns of Tozeur and Douz can be slower than in Tunis or on Djerba, so do not rely on them for large uploads.
Can I upgrade my room or add extra nights?
Extra nights in Tunis before or after the tour can be arranged as a paid option, and a single room supplement is available for solo travellers who want their own room. Given the demand for these dates, options are limited, so ask our sales team early.
What kind of food will we eat?
Meals are included as indicated in the day-by-day itinerary, typically breakfast at your hotel and dinner at the hotel on touring days such as Kairouan and Tozeur. On day 9 you shop for ingredients in the Tunis central market and prepare a traditional Tunisian meal with a local chef, which you then eat together. Expect couscous, brik, grilled fish on Djerba and plenty of harissa.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diets?
Please tell us about any dietary requirements when you book. We are always willing to look at them and, where possible, we will do our best to accommodate you, although we cannot guarantee that every restaurant, hotel or boat on the route will be able to meet every need. Your guide will also help you find suitable options along the way.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not recommended for drinking in Tunisia. Use bottled water or a Water-to-Go filter bottle, which removes over 99.9 percent of contaminants and avoids single-use plastic. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25 percent off at the Water-to-Go website.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The tour runs with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 travellers, so you always travel with a proper group, and the shared anticipation of the eclipse makes these departures naturally sociable. Solo travellers are very welcome.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on two people sharing a twin or double room. If you are travelling alone and happy to share, we will try to pair you with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you prefer your own room, or no share can be arranged, the single room supplement applies. See the Single Room Supplement option on the tour page for details.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run between 10 and 20 people and the tour is guaranteed to operate with a minimum of 10. Expect a mix of nationalities and ages united by curiosity about astronomy, ancient history and the Sahara, with a fair share of Star Wars fans.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Many of our group itineraries can be booked as private departures, and we may be able to assist with a limited number of private eclipse tours. Accommodation around these dates has very limited availability, so contact us as early as possible.
Is this tour suitable for children?
No minimum age is specified. A total solar eclipse is an extraordinary educational experience, and the Star Wars locations at Ong Jemel and Matmata are a hit with younger travellers. Contact us to discuss whether the pace and heat suit your family.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Most Western nationalities, including the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not require a visa for short stays in Tunisia. Rules can change, so check current requirements with the Tunisian embassy for your nationality before travel. Visa fees, where applicable, are not included.
Where does the tour start and finish, and are airport transfers included?
The tour starts and finishes in Tunis. Our staff meet you at the airport on day 1 and transfer you to your hotel, and on day 10 you are transferred back to Tunis airport for your departure flight. A 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service is included, so any flight time is fine.
What should I pack?
Pack for hot, dry weather with modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for mosques and medinas. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the mountain oases and troglodyte villages, a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, and a light layer for cool desert evenings. Eclipse viewing glasses are essential for the partial phases, and we will advise on these closer to departure. Bring swimwear for the Djerba resort.
What about money and tipping?
The local currency is the Tunisian dinar, which you exchange on arrival. Carry enough cash for the desert section, as ATMs accepting foreign cards are scarcer outside Tunis and Djerba. Tipping is customary in Tunisia for guides and drivers and is not included; your guide will brief current norms at the start of the tour.
Are any vaccinations required?
Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid are commonly recommended for Tunisia. There is no malaria risk on this itinerary. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current advice before departure.
Can I extend my stay with the Tunisia Eclipse Extension?
Yes. The 5-day Tunisia Eclipse Extension operates immediately after this tour, starting and finishing in Tunis, and takes you to the green north of the country, a stark contrast to the desert landscapes of the south. Contact our sales team to add it to your booking.
Can I add extra nights in Tunis?
Yes. Extra nights in Tunis before the tour or after it are available as a paid option, which is a good idea if you want to explore the medina and Avenue Habib Bourguiba at leisure or arrive rested before the eclipse. Ask when booking, as availability around these dates is limited.
Can I combine this with your Egypt or Morocco eclipse tours?
The eclipse happens on a single day, so the Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco eclipse tours are alternatives rather than combinations. If you want more time in the region after Tunisia, the Tunisia Eclipse Extension is the natural add-on, and we can advise on onward travel to Morocco or Egypt on request.
Is there free time to relax on Djerba after the eclipse?
Yes. After totality on day 8 you have the rest of the day free to relax by the Mediterranean at your seaside resort or explore more of the island. Day 7 is a full guided day on Djerba covering the Guellala Museum, El Ghriba Synagogue, the Djerbahood street art in Erriadh and Houmt Souk.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as possible. Eclipse tours on the path of totality fill up well over a year ahead, and accommodation on Djerba and across southern Tunisia has very limited availability around these dates. We hold confirmed hotel allocations, but booking early secures your place.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the tour page and pay the initial non-refundable deposit of GBP 800 or US$ 1100 per person to secure your place. The interim non-refundable deposit of GBP 1000 or US$ 1350 per person is due on 31 October 2026 and the balance by 31 March 2027. Full booking instructions are sent on confirmation.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, repatriation and cancellation. Given the non-refundable deposit structure on this tour, cancellation cover is particularly important. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance.
What's your cancellation policy?
Because of the strict deposit and cancellation rules imposed by hotels over the eclipse period, our standard policy does not apply. The initial deposit, the interim deposit due 31 October 2026 and the balance due 31 March 2027 are each non-refundable once paid. Full terms are in our booking conditions, and your funds are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if this tour is sold out?
If Deluxe B is full, ask about the 9-day Tunisia Eclipse Adventure Deluxe A, which views the eclipse from Chaffar Beach near Sfax, or our Morocco Eclipse Adventure and Egypt Eclipse Adventure (C). We may also be able to arrange a limited number of private tours. Contact us to check current availability.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Bhutan

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
