Why book the Morocco Eclipse Adventure tour?
Morocco Eclipse Adventure is our 11-day small-group tour built around the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027, which you watch from Achakar Beach on the Atlantic coast just outside Tangier. Around the eclipse, the route runs from Casablanca to Marrakech via Rabat, Tangier and Cape Spartel, the blue city of Chefchaouen, the UNESCO medina of Fes, Ifrane and the cedar forests of Azrou, a camel ride and Berber camp night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate and the UNESCO ksar of Ait Benhaddou. Groups run 10-20 people with an English-speaking guide throughout.
What makes this eclipse viewing special compared to watching independently?
You are positioned on the Atlantic coastline at Achakar Beach near Tangier, with transport from the Occidental Tangier hotel, a full day dedicated to the eclipse and live commentary from Dr. Gordon Stacey, Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University. Dr. Stacey hosts a talk at the start of the trip on the science of solar eclipses and what to look for at each stage, then talks you through the event itself. The partial eclipse begins at 08:40, totality runs from 09:44 to 09:49 (four minutes and fifty-one seconds, peaking at 09:47) and the partial phase ends at 11:00.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Morocco?
Yes. The eclipse is the centrepiece, but the itinerary is also a complete Morocco circuit in its own right: the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes el-Bali, the Middle Atlas, the Sahara, the kasbah country around Ouarzazate, Ait Benhaddou and two days in Marrakech. If you are combining a bucket-list eclipse with a first visit to Morocco, this is the package to choose.
What related tours can I consider if this is fully booked?
The single departure (31 July to 10 August 2027) is currently showing as fully booked with a waitlist. If you are drawn to Tunisia, our Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 sits on the same eclipse path. For a premium-level experience, the Egypt Eclipse Adventure (C) is planned around optimal viewing in Luxor. Nabatean Nights: Perseid Meteor Shower in Jordan is also listed as a related tour.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
The single 2027 departure is listed at 2999 GBP (or 3995 US dollars) per person. That covers 10 nights in 4 and 5-star hotels, Moroccan character properties and the Xaluca Bivouacs desert camp, all transport by air-conditioned Sprinter van or coach, a 4WD desert safari and camel ride, a full day dedicated to the eclipse near Tangier, Dr. Gordon Stacey's briefings and live commentary, an English-speaking guide and driver for all sightseeing, and 24-hour airport transfers. Hotel space around the eclipse dates is scarce and specially allocated.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 24-hour arrival and departure airport transfer service, accommodation in 4 and 5-star hotels and Moroccan character properties, 1 night in a comfortable Berber desert camp, transport by air-conditioned Sprinter van or coach, a day dedicated to witnessing the 2027 solar eclipse in a coastal location close to Tangier, a 4WD desert safari and camel riding experience, meals as indicated in the itinerary, and an English-speaking tour guide for all sightseeing plus driver.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, compulsory travel insurance, visas, tipping, eclipse viewing glasses, meals not indicated in the itinerary (for example dinner in Tangier on Day 2), drinks, snacks, personal expenses and optional activities. Bring or buy certified eclipse glasses before you travel. Your guide will brief current tipping amounts at the start of the tour.
What are the deposit and payment terms for this tour?
Due to stricter cancellation and deposit rules imposed by the hotels over the eclipse period, our standard deposit policy does not apply. An initial non-refundable deposit of 700 GBP (or 1000 US dollars) per person is due at booking, a further non-refundable interim deposit of 700 GBP (or 1000 US dollars) per person is due on 30 November 2026, and the balance is due on 31 March 2027 and is non-refundable after payment. The equivalent in your selected currency is shown during the online booking process.
How physically demanding is the Morocco Eclipse Adventure?
Easy to moderate. You walk through medinas on uneven cobblestones in Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes and Marrakech, stroll along the riverbank in Todra Gorge and climb the alleys of Ait Benhaddou. Eclipse day involves an early start from the hotel and several hours outdoors on the beach. The camel ride at Erg Chebbi is short and to a sunset viewpoint. No special fitness is required.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Morocco suits a wide age range and our guides set a sensible pace with breaks for mint tea. Be aware that early August is hot, particularly in Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water. Let us know about any specific concerns before booking.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Medina alleys, cobblestones, the terraces above the Fes tanneries and the earthen paths of Ait Benhaddou can be challenging, and the desert camp night involves 4WD travel across dunes. Please contact us before booking and we will advise honestly on what can be adapted.
Is Morocco safe to visit?
Yes. Morocco is one of Africa's most visited destinations with a well-established tourism infrastructure, and you are with a guide and small group throughout. Exercise normal urban caution in the medinas and check current UK Foreign Office travel advice before travel.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. We host many solo female travellers on our Morocco tours. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered, a scarf handy for mosques and conservative areas) makes daily life considerably smoother, and your guide will advise throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first contact and has local medical contacts. Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech have good private hospitals. Travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is compulsory on this tour.
What happens if the eclipse viewing location or arrangements change?
The itinerary and hotels represent our current plans. Given the popularity of this event, local authorities may implement specific controls and arrangements in Tangier over the eclipse days, so the exact viewing location and Eclipse Day logistics will be finalised closer to departure. We have confirmed allocations at the hotels listed but may use alternative hotels of an equivalent standard if demand requires it.
What is the accommodation actually like?
A mix of 4 to 5-star hotels and traditional Moroccan character properties, plus 1 night at the Xaluca Bivouacs Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Properties named in the itinerary include the Occidental Tangier and Ksar Ighnda near Ait Benhaddou. Rooms are twin, triple or double en-suite with air conditioning, and all couples are given a private double room. Specific hotels are subject to change.
What is the Berber camp night like?
You spend Day 6 at the Xaluca Bivouacs after a 4WD drive across the Erg Chebbi dunes and a sunset camel ride. Each tent has a comfortable bed with all bedding provided and a private en-suite bathroom with shower. Dinner is served under the stars with drumming and traditional storytelling around the fire.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is normally available at the 4 and 5-star hotels and character properties. At the desert camp connectivity is limited. A Moroccan SIM card is cheap and easy to buy in Casablanca if you need data throughout.
Can I upgrade or have my own room?
The tour price is based on two people sharing. A single room supplement is available and must be booked in advance; see the Single Room Supplement option for room sharing choices and charges. Given the unprecedented demand for accommodation around the eclipse dates, alternative hotel upgrades are limited. Contact our sales team.
What kind of food will we eat?
Moroccan cuisine is one of the world's greats: tagines, couscous, harira soup, fresh bread, preserved lemons and endless mint tea. Highlights on this tour include dinner at the Berber camp and the street food stalls of Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech. Meals are included as indicated in the itinerary, with others left free so you can explore local restaurants.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diets?
Please tell us about any dietary requirements when you book. We are always willing to look at them and, where possible, we will do our best to accommodate you, although we cannot guarantee that every restaurant, hotel or boat on the route will be able to meet every need. Your guide will also help you find suitable options along the way.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled or filtered water throughout Morocco. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good way to avoid single-use plastic, particularly on eclipse day and in the desert where you should carry plenty of water.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The shared excitement of counting down to totality creates an extraordinary group dynamic, and Morocco tours attract a strong proportion of solo travellers. With a maximum of 20 people, it is easy to connect with your fellow eclipse chasers.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is based on twin-sharing. If you are a solo traveller willing to share, we will try to pair you with another traveller of the same sex; if no share can be arranged, the single room supplement applies. Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details and charges.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The tour is guaranteed to run with a minimum of 10 travellers and a maximum of 20. It is a single, non-repeating departure designed around the eclipse, so expect a group united by curiosity about astronomy and Moroccan culture, with Cornell astronomer Dr. Gordon Stacey travelling alongside you.
Can I book a private eclipse tour?
Due to exceptional demand, accommodation has very limited availability around these dates. We may be able to assist with a limited number of private tours; contact us for details as early as possible.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
No minimum age is specified. Older children and teenagers tend to love Morocco for the colour, the medinas and the camel ride, and a total eclipse explained by a professional astronomer is an extraordinary educational experience. Contact us to discuss.
Do I need a visa for Morocco?
Many nationalities (UK, US, Canada, Australia, EU) do not need a visa for Morocco for stays of up to 90 days. Check current requirements for your nationality with your nearest Moroccan consulate before booking, as rules can change. Visas are not included in the tour price.
What should I pack?
Modest, lightweight clothing (shoulders and knees covered for medinas and religious sites), comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a light layer for the desert night. For eclipse day bring certified eclipse viewing glasses, as these are not included, plus solar filters if you plan to photograph the sun. Morocco uses Type C and E sockets at 220V.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry to Morocco from most countries. Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus are commonly recommended. Consult your GP or a travel clinic well before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts in Casablanca and ends in Marrakech, and 24-hour airport transfers are included at both ends. If you prefer to fly into Marrakech, an early arrival option includes a night in Marrakech and a transfer to Casablanca on Day 1 to join the group. If it is easier to fly home from Casablanca, a private transfer from Marrakech to Casablanca airport is available in the options section.
What about tipping?
Tipping is expected and normal in Morocco and is not included in the tour price. Your guide will brief current suggested amounts for drivers, camp staff, hotel porters and local guides at the start of the tour.
Can I start in Marrakech instead of Casablanca?
Yes. For passengers who prefer flying into Marrakech, an early arrival option includes overnight accommodation in Marrakech and a transfer to Casablanca on Day 1 to join the rest of the group.
Can I add extra days in Marrakech at the end?
Yes. The tour ends after breakfast on Day 11 in Marrakech and extra days can be added to explore the city further. Marrakech easily rewards another day or two of souk browsing, hammam visits and rooftop dining beyond the palaces, Medersa Ben Youssef, Majorelle Garden and Jemaa el-Fna covered on Day 10.
Can I depart from Casablanca rather than Marrakech?
Yes. For those who find it easier to fly out of Casablanca, a private transfer from Marrakech to Casablanca Airport is available as a paid option; please see the options section on the tour page.
Is the camel ride included or an optional extra?
The sunset camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes and the 4WD desert safari are included on Day 6. Other optional activities along the route are at your own expense and your guide can advise what is available.
How far ahead should I book?
This is a single departure (31 July to 10 August 2027) that is currently showing as fully booked with a waitlist. Hotel availability around the eclipse is extremely limited, so contact us immediately to join the waitlist or to ask about private tour options.
How does booking work?
Reserve via the online booking form on the tour page or contact our sales team to check availability. Special non-refundable deposit rules apply: 700 GBP (or 1000 US dollars) per person at booking, a further 700 GBP (or 1000 US dollars) on 30 November 2026, and the balance on 31 March 2027. Standard Encounters Travel deposit terms do not apply to this tour.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, and we strongly recommend cancellation cover given the non-refundable deposit structure. We partner with World Nomads. Send your policy number before departure.
What's your cancellation policy?
Special non-refundable deposit rules apply to eclipse tours because of the hotel agreements in place for these dates. The initial deposit, the interim deposit due 30 November 2026 and the balance due 31 March 2027 are each non-refundable once paid. Full terms are confirmed at booking. Encounters Travel is UK-registered and your funds are protected through Trust My Travel against company insolvency.
What if the Morocco Eclipse Adventure is sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist, as places can become available. Alternatively, the Tunisia Eclipse Explorer 2027 and the Egypt Eclipse Adventure (C) are both positioned on the 2027 eclipse path, and a limited number of private Morocco tours may be possible.
