Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Beirut Mini Break tour?
The Beirut Mini Break is a 4-day city break that gives you an honest, guided introduction to one of the Middle East's most fascinating capitals. You get a full guided Beirut city tour taking in Pigeon Rock, a day trip north to the spectacular Jeita Grotto (a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition), a cable car ride up to the shrine at Harissa, and the ancient Phoenician harbour town of Byblos. A free day lets you explore independently or take an optional tour to Baalbek (one of the Roman world's most impressive temple complexes), the Beiteddine Palace, the Ksara Caves wine tasting, or the medieval site of Aanjar. Groups are capped at 12.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Lebanon?
Yes, it is purpose-built for first-timers. The guided city tour and the day trips north give you a comprehensive introduction to what makes Beirut and the surrounding region so distinctive, with a local guide navigating and explaining everything.
What is the difference between this and the Lebanon and Egypt Encounters tour?
The Beirut Mini Break (4 days) is a focused city break, ideal if you have limited time and want a high-quality introduction to Lebanon only. Lebanon and Egypt Encounters (17 days) spends 8 days in Lebanon visiting Beirut, Beiteddine, Tyre, Sidon, Baalbek, Cedars and the Qadisha Valley, before continuing to Egypt for the pyramids, Nile and Luxor. If you want to see Lebanon in depth alongside Egypt, that is the tour for you.
What is the best time of year to visit Beirut?
Beirut has a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for sightseeing, typically 18-25°C. Summer is hot and humid but lively, with the city at its most energetic. The tour departs most Fridays throughout the year.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Your price covers 3 nights in a 4-star hotel, all transport in private A/C vehicles, a 24-hour airport transfer service, a local English-speaking guide for all sightseeing, and the Jeita Grotto and Harissa cable car visits. Lebanon is not a budget destination, and a vetted 4-star hotel with a knowledgeable local guide covering the highlights in just 4 days represents genuinely good value.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 3 nights in a 4-star hotel in Beirut, all transport and transfers in private A/C vehicles, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, a local English-speaking guide for all guided sightseeing, and 3 breakfasts. The Jeita Grotto visit and Harissa cable car are included in the guided programme.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, lunches and dinners, entrance fees on the optional day out, drinks, personal expenses, and guide tips. Budget for meals (Beirut has an excellent restaurant scene at a range of price points) and for any optional tours you choose on the free day.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Extra hotel nights in Beirut can be added at any end of the tour.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. The city tour and day trips involve walking on some uneven surfaces and steps. The Jeita Grotto visit includes both walking sections and a boat ride. The Harissa cable car is accessible to most. No strenuous hiking is required.
What if I am older or have mobility issues?
This tour is one of our more accessible city breaks. The main consideration is that some historic sites have steps or cobblestones. Please get in touch before booking if you have specific mobility needs so we can advise on which elements may present challenges.
What is the weather like in Beirut?
Beirut's Mediterranean climate means hot, dry summers (July to August, 28-32°C) and mild, wetter winters (December to February, 10-15°C). Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Bring a light jacket for evenings year-round.
Is Lebanon safe to visit right now?
Lebanon has had periods of instability, and we strongly recommend checking the most recent UK Foreign Office travel advice before booking. When we operate this tour, we do so because our local team has assessed conditions as suitable for safe travel. We monitor the situation continuously and would suspend departures rather than run tours in unsafe conditions.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
For women travelling solo on our guided tour, the guided nature of the itinerary and the vetted 4-star hotel provide a good level of support. Lebanon has a relatively liberal urban culture compared to some other countries in the region, but modest dress is recommended outside the main tourist areas.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your local guide is your first point of contact. Beirut has good private hospitals with English-speaking staff. Travel insurance with full medical cover is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a 4-star hotel in Beirut for all 3 nights. The hotel is centrally located with standard 4-star facilities: A/C, en-suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi and breakfast included.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. The 4-star hotel includes Wi-Fi. A Lebanese SIM card is an affordable option for data on the go.
Can I add extra nights in Beirut?
Yes. The tour can be extended with additional hotel nights in Beirut before or after the main tour dates, with airport transfers included on any added days you book with us.
What kind of food will we eat?
Lebanese cuisine is widely regarded as one of the finest in the Middle East. Mezze (hummus, falafel, tabbouleh, stuffed vine leaves, grilled meats) are the backbone of a meal, with excellent fresh salads and flatbreads. Beirut's restaurant scene ranges from traditional Lebanese to a huge international selection.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Lebanese cuisine is exceptionally rich in vegetarian and vegan dishes. Mezze platters are naturally plant-forward. Gluten-free eating is workable with notice. Let us know at booking and we will brief the local team.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in Lebanon. Bottled water is cheap and widely available. Hotels provide safe water for hot drinks.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The tour runs as a small group capped at 12 and a good share of each departure books solo. The guided format means you never have to navigate alone.
Do I have to share a room?
Solo travellers are paired with another guest of the same gender by default. A single supplement is available if you prefer your own room.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. Departures run most Fridays throughout the year.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Beirut Mini Break can run as a private departure on dates of your choosing. Contact us for details.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children and teenagers will find Beirut and the day trips engaging. The Jeita Grotto is particularly impressive for younger visitors. For families with young children, a private departure lets you pace things appropriately.
Do I need a visa for Lebanon?
Visa requirements vary by nationality. Many Western nationals can get a visa on arrival at Beirut airport (BEY). Some nationalities are subject to different rules. Check the current requirements for your specific nationality before booking.
What should I pack?
Smart casual clothing (Beirut is a stylish city), modest options for religious sites, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for evenings, and a plug adapter (Lebanon uses Type C/D at 220V).
Are any vaccinations recommended?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry from most countries. Typically recommended: Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Check with your GP or a travel clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and ends at Beirut airport (BEY). You book whatever flights suit you. We are happy to arrange flights if you prefer.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Lebanon. Your guide will brief appropriate current amounts for the guide, driver and hotel staff.
Can I take an optional day trip to Baalbek?
Yes. Baalbek is available as an optional tour on the free day. It contains some of the most complete and impressive Roman temple ruins in the world, including the Temple of Jupiter and the Temple of Bacchus, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Can I visit the Beiteddine Palace and Ksara Caves?
Yes. An optional day in the Chouf Mountains visits the village of Deir El Qamar (the name means monastery of the moon, and it was Lebanon's capital in the 17th century), the Beiteddine Palace, the Ksara Caves wine tasting, and the ancient site of Aanjar.
Can I extend into the Lebanon and Egypt Encounters tour?
Yes. The Lebanon and Egypt Encounters tour (17 days) extends the Lebanon section to 8 days and then continues to Egypt for the Pyramids, Nile cruise and Luxor. If you want to see Lebanon in depth alongside Egypt, that is the logical extension.
How far ahead should I book?
The tour departs most Fridays year-round, so there is good flexibility. That said, 4 to 8 weeks ahead is a sensible minimum. Book earlier around peak travel periods.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, full amount, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation. We partner with World Nomads. Send us your policy number before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure receive a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us. We can check for cancellations or suggest the next available Friday departure. The Lebanon and Egypt Encounters tour is an alternative if you want more time in Lebanon.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
