Frequently Asked Questions

What is the focus of this 6-day tour and who is it designed for?
The North Tunisia Explorer is a small-group cultural immersion into the lesser-visited northwest of the country. It is built around hands-on experiences: a UNESCO pottery workshop in Sejnane, a guided forest hike with a local family lunch in Ain Draham, the extraordinary underground Roman villas of Bulla Regia, bread-making at the House of Bread in El Kef, Dougga (North Africa's best-preserved Roman town, UNESCO), and an organic olive oil tasting. It suits curious travellers who want genuine cultural exchange and history beyond the standard Tunisia highlights.
What are the main highlights of the itinerary?
Key highlights include: the Sejnane pottery workshop with local women using a UNESCO-listed wheel-less technique; the Genoese Fort in Tabarka with panoramic views of forest meeting sea; the cork oak forests and mountain retreat of Ain Draham; the guided forest hike with a traditional lunch hosted by a local family; the subterranean Roman villas of Bulla Regia; the Medina of El Kef and the bread-making experience at Dar el Khobz; and a morning at the magnificent ruins of Dougga including the Capitol, large Roman Theatre, and Lybico-Punic Mausoleum.
What makes the Sejnane pottery workshop special?
Sejnane is a small town in northwest Tunisia where local women have practised a completely wheel-free pottery technique for thousands of years, a tradition that is now UNESCO-listed as intangible cultural heritage. You participate actively in the workshop, learning to hand-shape clay and decorate it with natural earth pigments alongside the women themselves. It is a rare, hands-on engagement with a living Berber tradition.
What is Dougga and why is it significant?
Dougga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and widely considered the best-preserved Roman town in North Africa. The extensive ruins include a Capitol, a large Theatre, a Lybico-Punic Mausoleum, temples, baths, and a forum. You spend a full morning exploring the site with a guide, gaining a direct sense of how a Roman provincial city functioned.
Is there a longer version of this tour available?
Yes. The Tunisian Encompassed tour (13 days) combines this northern itinerary with the southern part of the country. If you want to see both north and south Tunisia, ask the team about the Tunisian Encompassed or the related Tunisian Encounters tour.
What is the group size on this tour?
Groups are a maximum of 12 and guaranteed to run with a minimum of 3. The small group size means you hear the guide clearly, enjoy intimate cultural exchanges, and have a personalised experience throughout.
What is included in the tour price?
Included are: 5 nights accommodation in 3 and 4-star hotels, all transport and transfers throughout, a 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service, services of a local Tunisian guide for all sightseeing, monument entrance fees for all sites on the itinerary, the Sejnane pottery workshop, olive oil tasting, the traditional family lunch, the bread-making experience, and all meals as indicated in the itinerary (5 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners).
What is not included?
Not included are international flights, visa fees, compulsory travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary (some lunches, some dinners), drinks, snacks, tips, hotel gala dinners (some hotels hold these on specific dates), and personal expenses.
How much spending money should we budget?
Budget around 15 to 25 US dollars per person per day for meals not included, drinks, snacks, and personal expenses. Allow more if you plan on shopping in markets. Budget tips separately: approximately 5 to 10 US dollars per person per day for the main guide, around 5 US dollars per person per day for any local guides, and 3 to 5 US dollars per person per day for the driver.
Is there a single room supplement?
Yes. The tour price is based on two people sharing. A single room supplement is available. If you are a solo traveller willing to share, contact us and we will try to match you with another same-sex traveller. Shares are arranged in order of booking.
How active is this tour?
The main physical activity is the guided forest hike in Ain Draham on Day 3. This is a walking tour through shaded cork oak forest led by a local expert. The Dougga ruins involve walking over uneven ground. All other activities are gentle: workshop participation, medina walks, and cultural visits. Overall, the tour suits people of average fitness.
What is the guided hike in Ain Draham like?
You walk through the cool, shaded cork oak and evergreen forests of the Kroumirie Mountains with a local guide who explains the region's ecology and flora. The hike leads to a traditional family lunch in the forest area. It is a gentle walk on shaded paths, not a strenuous mountain climb.
What should we wear when visiting mosques and medinas?
Tunisia is a predominantly Muslim country where modesty is valued. Cover your shoulders and ensure your legs are covered when entering mosques. In medinas and town centres, loose-fitting clothing that is not revealing is appropriate. Shorts are acceptable at tourist and archaeological sites but not in places of worship.
Is travel insurance compulsory and what must it cover?
Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours. Your policy must cover personal accident and liability, medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and travel delay. Cover for cancellation and lost baggage is strongly recommended. You must provide policy details before departure. World Nomads Travel Insurance is a good option, covering more than 150 adventure activities.
What vaccinations do we need for Tunisia?
Recommended vaccinations for Tunisia include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Malaria is not normally present and no Yellow Fever certificate is required. Check the latest recommendations with your GP or a travel clinic before departure.
What financial protection covers my booking?
Encounters Travel is a UK-registered company. All customer funds are protected through Trust My Travel's insurance policy. In the event of insolvency, you would be refunded for unfulfilled services or repatriated to the UK where applicable.
What types of hotels are used on this tour?
Accommodation is in 3 and 4-star hotels. In Tunis, the Carlton Hotel is a charming 1926 Art Nouveau building on the prestigious Avenue Habib Bourguiba, with comfortable rooms and a balcony option. In Ain Draham, Hotel La Foret is a mountain retreat with indoor and outdoor pools, a full spa with hammam and sauna, and rooms with balcony views over the cork oak forests. Near Dougga, the Hotel Thugga is a simple, clean, and welcoming property just 6 km from the site.
Are rooms air-conditioned and en-suite?
Yes. All rooms are air-conditioned with private en-suite bathrooms. In Ain Draham, the mountain air means A/C is often not needed during cooler months, but heating is available.
Can couples be guaranteed a double room?
Yes. All couples are given a private double room throughout the tour. Accommodation is based on twin or double rooms depending on availability and preference.
How many meals are included and what are they like?
The tour includes 5 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 3 dinners. Highlights include a traditional family lunch in the Ain Draham forest on Day 3 and a farm-to-table lunch at the olive oil estate on Day 5. Hotel breakfasts are typically buffet style. The remaining meals are at your own expense, giving you flexibility to eat at local restaurants.
What is the olive oil tasting and farm lunch experience?
At the Domaine Ben Ismail Reserve or a similar estate on Day 5, you sample local varieties of organic olive oil and learn about the pressing process. This is followed by a simple, traditional Tunisian lunch using farm-fresh ingredients. It is a sensory and educational highlight of the tour.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Yes, declare dietary requirements at the time of booking. Your guide will communicate these to restaurants and hosts. Vegetarian dishes are widely available across Tunisia. If you have severe allergies, the team can help ensure the family lunch and farm lunch hosts are aware in advance.
Is the water safe to drink in Tunisia and what do you recommend?
Tap water is not recommended for drinking. A Water-to-Go filter bottle removes over 99.9 percent of contaminants from any non-salt water source. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25 percent off at the Water-to-Go website (valid in the UK, USA, and Canada). This avoids the cost and plastic waste of buying bottled water throughout the trip.
Is this tour good for solo travellers?
Yes. The very small group size (maximum 12) makes it a comfortable setting for solo travellers. You join a tight-knit group with shared cultural interests. We will try to match solo travellers with a same-sex room-share partner. If no share is available, the single supplement applies.
What is the typical profile of travellers on this tour?
This tour attracts culturally curious travellers interested in history, crafts, and authentic local experiences rather than beach holidays or mass tourism. Expect a mix of ages and nationalities, all drawn to the off-the-beaten-track focus of northwest Tunisia.
Can this tour be booked as a private departure?
Yes. The tour can be booked privately on a date of your choosing. A private departure also allows more flexibility to customise the itinerary, accommodation level, or pace. Contact the sales team for pricing and options.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Most nationalities (including USA, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand) do not need a visa for Tunisia for stays under 90 days. Other nationalities should check with their nearest Tunisian consulate. Requirements can change, so verify with the relevant embassy before travel.
What airport does the tour use and are transfers included?
All tours start and finish at Tunis Carthage Airport (TUN). A 24-hour airport meet and assist service is included, and our representative meets you in the arrivals hall after you clear immigration. Many European low-cost carriers fly to Enfidha Airport: a return Enfidha transfer supplement is available as a paid option.
What currency is used and how should we manage money?
The local currency is the Tunisian Dinar. Bring hard currency (US dollars, euros, or GB pounds) and a reliable ATM card. Outside major cities, ATMs that accept foreign cards can be scarce. BCM appears to be the most reliable bank for foreign-card ATM withdrawals. Budget 15 to 25 US dollars per person per day for personal expenses.
What should we wear for the Ain Draham forest hike?
Wear comfortable walking shoes (ideally broken in), breathable layers you can add or remove as you move through the forest, and a sun hat. The Kroumirie forest is cool and shaded, but the hike involves some ascent. Bring a light waterproof in case of rain, particularly in the cooler months from November to March.
Is haggling expected in the markets and medinas?
Yes. Haggling is a traditional practice in Tunisian markets. Do not take the initial price as fixed. Decide your value for an item and negotiate at a relaxed pace. If you quote a price, be prepared to pay it. Walking away is perfectly acceptable.
Can we add extra nights in Tunis?
Yes. An extra night in Tunis before the tour starts and an extra night in Tunis after the tour ends are both available as paid options, staying at the same hotel as the main tour. Airport transfers are still included on extra nights booked through us.
What other Tunisia tours complement this one?
The Tunisian Encompassed tour (13 days) extends this itinerary to include the south of the country: Kairouan, Tozeur, the desert, and more. The Tunisia Eclipse Adventure 2027 (9 days) is a completely different itinerary focused on the 2027 total solar eclipse. The Tunisian Encounters tour (9 days) is another option. Ask the team to help plan the best combination.
Can guiding be provided in languages other than English?
On private or tailor-made departures, guiding in German, Italian, Spanish, or other languages may be available. Contact the team for details and a quotation.
How do I book and what is the deposit policy?
Book online via the Dates and Prices tab on the tour page. You can make a deposit or full payment, or hold a provisional reservation. Full payment is due 8 weeks before departure. Payment by debit or credit card, bank transfer, or cheque is accepted.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full booking conditions and cancellation charges are detailed on the Encounters Travel website. As a UK-registered company backed by Trust My Travel, your funds are protected. Contact the team for specific amendment or cancellation terms applicable to your booking.
How far in advance should I book this tour?
Regular small-group departures run throughout the year, so there is usually good availability. However, the very small maximum group size of 12 means popular dates can fill quickly. We recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance, and earlier for high-season dates.
What is Tabarka and the Genoese Fort?
Tabarka is a picturesque coastal town in northwest Tunisia with a striking red-rock shoreline. The Genoese Fort (also called the Roman Fort) stands on a rocky islet connected to the mainland, offering panoramic views over the Mediterranean where the dense cork oak forests of the interior meet the sea. You visit it on Day 2 before driving up to Ain Draham.
What is Ain Draham like as a destination?
Ain Draham is a mountain retreat in the Kroumirie Mountains, known for its cool, crisp air and dense cork oak and evergreen forests. It feels completely different from coastal Tunisia. At Hotel La Foret you have mountain balcony views, indoor and outdoor pools, a hammam and sauna, and two restaurants. It is the most relaxing base of the trip and a genuine contrast to the historical sites.
What is Bulla Regia and what makes it unusual among Roman sites?
Bulla Regia is a Roman archaeological site in northwest Tunisia, uniquely famous for its subterranean villas. To escape the intense summer heat, its Roman residents built their living quarters below ground level, creating cool, decorated rooms beneath the street. These underground spaces with their original mosaics survive remarkably well. You visit with a guide on Day 4.
Do we need good shoes for the Dougga ruins?
Yes. Dougga is an extensive open-air archaeological site on a hillside, with uneven stone pathways, steps, and rough ground between monuments. Comfortable closed-toe shoes with good grip are strongly recommended. The site requires a morning of walking to cover the Capitol, Theatre, Mausoleum, and other structures.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!
