Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Crossroads of Turkey tour?
Crossroads of Turkey is a 13-day circuit from Istanbul that goes far beyond any standard Turkey highlights tour. Beyond Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale, and Cappadocia (covered thoroughly), you push into southeastern Turkey for three sites that are among the most extraordinary on the planet: Gobekli Tepe (the world's oldest known temples, 11,000-13,000 years old, predating Stonehenge and the Pyramids), the strange beehive mud-brick houses of Harran, and the Holy Pools of Abraham in Sanliurfa (birthplace of Abraham). The tour also takes in Mount Nemrut's giant Commagene statues at sunset (UNESCO), the submerged village of Halfeti, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep, and flies back to Istanbul. Maximum 20 travellers, 3-4 star and boutique hotels.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Turkey?
Yes. The 13 days cover western Turkey's icons (Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Cappadocia) before venturing into the southeast that most tours never reach. It's a comprehensive first visit and an extraordinary second or third visit. Gobekli Tepe alone is worth the trip for anyone interested in the origins of human civilisation.
What's the difference between this and your other Turkey tours?
Crossroads of Turkey (13 days) goes the deepest into southeastern Turkey, adding Mount Nemrut, Harran, Sanliurfa, Gobekli Tepe, Halfeti, and Gaziantep to the standard western Turkey circuit. Anatolian Adventure (10 days) covers the western circuit without the southeast. Discover Turkey (8 days) flies into Kusadasi and misses Gallipoli/Troy and the southeast entirely. Best of Turkey (11 days) runs a similar western circuit in reverse. Turkey Encounters (17 days) is the most extended version. If Gobekli Tepe and southeastern Turkey are on your list, Crossroads is the only tour that includes them.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Saturdays year-round. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are best for the full itinerary: comfortable temperatures across Cappadocia, the Aegean coast, and the Euphrates basin. Southeastern Turkey (Sanliurfa, Harran, Gaziantep) is very hot in summer. The Mount Nemrut sunset visit is available year-round; in winter the summit can be cold and snowy but dramatically beautiful.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, Turkey is often marketed at budget prices. What this delivers: 12 nights in 3-4 star and boutique hotels (including the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Cappadocia and the Port Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul), 12 breakfasts and 9 dinners, a domestic flight back to Istanbul from Gaziantep (cutting two days of driving), all entrance fees including Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Gobekli Tepe, Mount Nemrut, and more, 13 days of private air-conditioned minibus with guide and driver, and a tipping kitty. The domestic flight and the breadth of included entrance fees are significant contributors.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 12 nights accommodation (MD Barbaros Canakkale, Ilayda Avantgarde 4-star Kusadasi, Adempira Pamukkale, Gamirasu Cave Hotel Urgup, Nemrut Euphrat Hotel Adiyaman, Hotel Harran Sanliurfa, Port Bosphorus Hotel Istanbul), 12 breakfasts, 9 dinners, domestic flight Gaziantep to Istanbul, all listed entrance fees, air-conditioned minibus transport, professional English-speaking guide, and tipping kitty.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, lunches, personal spending, and guide/driver tips are not included. Optional activities like cooking classes are at your own cost. Your guide will brief tipping recommendations at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The main walking elements are the large ancient sites: Ephesus (a vast marble-paved Roman city), Gallipoli's battlefield walks, Pamukkale's travertines, Cappadocia's valleys and cave churches, and Mount Nemrut's summit (a short but steep walk to the statue field). Gobekli Tepe is a short walk from the visitor centre. Comfortable walking shoes with grip are essential. No strenuous hiking is required.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
The 13-day pace is well-managed and the group (maximum 20) moves together. Ephesus and Gallipoli are the two most walking-intensive days. The cave hotel in Cappadocia has stairs. Mount Nemrut's summit walk is short but steep. A healthy older traveller with good shoes will handle everything comfortably.
What if I have mobility issues?
Ephesus's marble streets and Gallipoli's uneven terrain can be challenging for limited mobility. Some Cappadocia cave sites involve narrow passages. Gobekli Tepe is largely flat. Flag any concerns at booking for specific advice.
How hot does it get?
Southeastern Turkey (Harran, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep) in summer can exceed 40°C. The Aegean coast is very warm in July and August. Spring and autumn are optimal across the full 13-day itinerary. Pamukkale's thermal pools are pleasant year-round.
Is Turkey safe to visit?
Turkey is one of the world's most visited destinations with a mature tourism infrastructure across the entire itinerary. The southeast (Sanliurfa, Gaziantep) is an active tourism region with excellent visitor facilities. Check your government's current travel advisory before departure and follow your guide's local knowledge.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Turkey is generally manageable for solo female travellers. The group format provides natural security. Modest dress near religious sites (Blue Mosque, Mevlana Museum, shrines in Sanliurfa) is both respectful and practical.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first contact. Turkey has good private medical facilities in all major cities. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is compulsory.
Will I be hassled by vendors?
At popular sites like Ephesus and the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, vendors are present. Having a guide provides a natural buffer. Your guide will brief you on local etiquette for politely declining at the start of the tour.
What's the accommodation actually like?
3-4 star and boutique hotels throughout. In Kusadasi you stay at the Ilayda Avantgarde (4-star, rooftop bar and pool). In Cappadocia, the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Urgup is genuinely extraordinary: rooms carved directly into ancient volcanic tufa. In Adiyaman you stay at the Nemrut Euphrat Hotel. In Sanliurfa at the Hotel Harran, which reflects the region's ancient architecture. The Port Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul (111 rooms, near the Galata Tower) is an excellent final night. The accommodation choices are as much part of the experience as the sites.
What's the cave hotel like?
The Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Urgup, Cappadocia is one of the most memorable stays on any Turkey tour. Rooms are carved into 1,000-year-old tufa caves, with thick stone walls and all modern amenities. Sleeping here is simply unlike anywhere else you'll stay.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi. Quality varies but is generally good at 4-star and boutique properties in Istanbul and Kusadasi. A Turkish SIM or data roaming package is recommended for connectivity on the road.
Can I upgrade?
Private departures allow for accommodation upgrades throughout. Contact us at booking if you'd like specific upgrades.
What kind of food will we eat?
Turkey has exceptional cuisine that changes dramatically by region. The Aegean coast offers fresh seafood and olive oil-based mezze. Konya is the heartland of slow-cooked Anatolian food. In Gaziantep, widely considered Turkey's food capital, you'll encounter baklava, pistachio dishes, and kebabs of a different quality to anything in the west. The nine included dinners give you a proper introduction to regional Turkish cooking.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Drink bottled water throughout Turkey. Hotel rooms provide it. A reusable Water-to-Go bottle is recommended to reduce plastic waste across 13 days.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very much so. The 13-day format gives real time to build friendships, and the mix of famous sites and genuinely remote southeastern Turkey creates the kind of shared discovery that bonds groups quickly. Many solo travellers rate this as one of their best group travel experiences.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available throughout. Contact us at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 20 travellers. Groups mix solo travellers, couples, and small groups of friends from various countries. The shared discovery of Gobekli Tepe tends to be a particularly memorable group moment.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available with exclusive vehicle and guide.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The 13-day itinerary with archaeological sites, battlefield visits, and late-evening Mount Nemrut summit trips is most suited to adults and older teenagers. Check with us at booking about specific ages.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
UK nationals do not need a visa for Turkey for stays up to 90 days. Other nationalities should check Turkey's e-visa portal for current requirements.
What should I pack?
Comfortable walking shoes with grip for Ephesus, Gallipoli, and Cappadocia valleys. Modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) for the Mevlana Museum, Blue Mosque, and Sanliurfa shrines. Layers for Cappadocia cave hotel evenings and Mount Nemrut's summit. Turkey uses Type C plugs at 220V. Sunscreen for long outdoor site days.
Are any vaccinations required?
Hepatitis A and Tetanus are recommended for Turkey. Check with your GP or travel health clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and ends in Istanbul. Fly into Istanbul (IST or SAW) and depart from Istanbul; the tour flies back from Gaziantep to Istanbul internally, so your departure airport is Istanbul. Book international flights independently.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included for group service tips at restaurants and sites. Tips for your guide and driver are separate and not included. Your guide will brief current recommended amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I take cooking classes?
Yes. Cooking classes are available as optional extras in Cappadocia, Kusadasi, and Istanbul.
Can I add extra days in Istanbul?
Yes. Extra nights in Istanbul before or after the tour are easily arranged. Istanbul rewards every extra day: Bosphorus cruises, the Princes' Islands, contemporary art galleries, and the city's extraordinary food scene all deserve more time.
Can I combine this with another Turkey tour?
Turkey Encounters (17 days) is the most extended version of the Turkey circuit. If you want to go deeper into any region, ask us about linking itineraries or extending individual sections.
How far ahead should I book?
Saturdays year-round means regular departures. Spring and autumn dates fill fastest. Book 2-3 months ahead for peak season; year-round availability usually allows for shorter lead times.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit for instant confirmation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is compulsory. World Nomads is a reliable option.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies with charges increasing closer to departure. Full terms are in the booking conditions. UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Join the waitlist or check Anatolian Adventure (10 days), Best of Turkey (11 days), or Turkey Encounters (17 days) for availability. Private departures on alternative dates can also be arranged.

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
