Frequently Asked Questions

Why book The Garden Route - 5 days tour?
This is the compact version of South Africa's most-loved road trip: 5 days from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth covering the Garden Route's greatest hits. You'll see the African penguin colony at Betties Bay, stand at Cape Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, taste wine on Route 62, visit an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn, canoe the Touw River in Wilderness National Park, walk the suspension bridge at Tsitsikamma and finish with a Big 5 safari in Addo Elephant National Park. Groups are capped at 12 and you choose your own comfort level, from backpacker dorms to deluxe guesthouses.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to South Africa?
Yes. The Garden Route is the classic introduction to South Africa and this tour covers the scenery, wine, wildlife and outdoor activities the region is famous for in a logical west-to-east sequence. A qualified local driver-guide is with you throughout, and the tour ends with a proper Big 5 game drive at Addo, making it a great first taste of African wildlife.
How does the 5-day tour differ from the 6, 8 and 10-day Garden Route tours?
All four versions share this same core itinerary from Cape Town to Addo. The 6-day tour adds Mossel Bay, Wilderness and a return journey to Cape Town. The 8-day tour adds 3 nights in Cape Town before the tour starts. The 10-day tour follows the 8-day option and adds Mossel Bay, Wilderness and a final night in Cape Town. Choose the 5-day tour if you want the Garden Route itself in the shortest time, or if you're arranging your own Cape Town stay and flying out of Port Elizabeth.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
The Garden Route is beautiful year-round and the tour runs throughout the year. Summer (November to March) brings the warmest weather and longest days. Whale season runs from July to November, when Southern Right Whales congregate off Hermanus and you may spot them from the shore on day 1. Spring (September to November) is lush and green after the winter rains.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Garden Route tours. What you're paying for is 4 nights in carefully vetted accommodation with a choice of level, an AC minibus with a qualified local driver-guide for all five days, wine tasting on Route 62, the Klein Karoo ostrich farm, canoeing and hiking in Wilderness National Park, entrance to Tsitsikamma National Park, a 2-3 hour game safari in Addo Elephant National Park and the meals stated in the itinerary. South Africa's backpacker circuit has many options; what this tour adds is the structure, the expertise and the included activities.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are a complimentary pickup on day 1 from a central Cape Town location of your choice, 4 nights accommodation in backpacker hostels or deluxe guesthouses and hotels, all transport in an AC minibus, an experienced and qualified local driver-guide, local wine tasting on Route 62, the Klein Karoo ostrich farm visit, canoeing and hiking in Wilderness National Park, hiking in Tsitsikamma National Park, a game viewing safari in Addo Elephant National Park, and meals as stated in the itinerary.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are international flights, visa fees if required, travel insurance, meals not indicated in the itinerary, drinks, snacks and personal expenses such as laundry, tips for your guide and driver, entrance fees and activities not mentioned in the itinerary, optional tours in Cape Town and elsewhere, airport transfers and Cape Town accommodation. Note that unlike the 8-day tour, this version does not include any nights in Cape Town. Your guide will advise on current tip amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Secure your place with a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is an active but accessible tour. You need to be comfortable walking for up to 3 hours, carrying your own luggage and getting in and out of a minibus frequently. The canoeing on the Touw River and the short 2km boardwalk hike to the waterfall in Wilderness National Park are gentle and suitable for most fitness levels, and both can be missed out if you wish. Optional activities such as the 216m Bloukrans bungee jump are for thrill-seekers, not required.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
The tour sets a maximum age of 65, though exceptions can be made for travellers who are relatively fit, can confidently walk for a minimum of 3 hours, take part in the included activities and carry their own luggage. Average ages are mid-30s, but if you're in good shape and active the Garden Route is a wonderful trip. Contact us to discuss your situation before booking.
What if I have mobility issues?
The tour involves walking on forest paths, boardwalks, beaches and uneven surfaces in national parks, and there are generally no porters to help with luggage, so you must manage your own bags. If you have significant mobility limitations this may not be the right tour for you; contact us to discuss, and we can advise on alternatives or private options where different vehicles can be used.
Is South Africa safe to visit right now?
South Africa is a well-established tourist destination and the Garden Route is one of its safest and most visited stretches. As in any country, be aware of your surroundings in urban areas and follow your guide's advice. We recommend checking the latest government travel advice for your home country before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Many solo women travel the Garden Route without issue, and being part of a small group of up to 12 adds a layer of security. The driver-guide is with the group throughout all five days, from your central Cape Town pickup to arrival in Port Elizabeth. South Africa's backpacker lodges are sociable and well set up for solo travellers.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can direct you to medical facilities along the route. South Africa has good medical infrastructure in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and clinics are accessible in the main towns along the Garden Route. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory.
What's the accommodation actually like?
You have a choice of three levels. Backpacker dorms in good quality, well-run lodges with a friendly, social vibe and often a bar or bonfire area. Private en-suite twin or double rooms within the same backpacker lodges if you want privacy. Or the deluxe guesthouse upgrade, which puts you in characterful guesthouses and small boutique hotels with beautiful gardens, friendly hosts and great views. Overnights are at Cape Agulhas or Struisbaai, a working game farm in the Oudtshoorn area, Sedgefield and Addo. At Addo both levels stay at Avoca River Cabins, a working citrus farm near the park.
Can I upgrade to the deluxe guesthouse option?
Yes. The deluxe guesthouse upgrade is available at the time of booking. You'll stay in higher-quality guesthouses and boutique hotels offering a more private, quieter experience throughout. The properties most often used are shown on the accommodation tab; alternatives of a similar standard may be used on some dates.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is widely available in backpacker lodges and guesthouses along the Garden Route, though speeds vary. At Avoca River Cabins near Addo, a working farm, you may find connectivity more limited.
What about air conditioning and heating?
Heating and air conditioning are not provided as standard in most South African backpacker lodges, guesthouses and small hotels, simply because they're not normally needed given the mild climate. Fans and extra blankets are always available on request.
What kind of food will we eat?
Included dinners are generally taken together at the backpacker lodge, giving the group a chance to socialise, though you're welcome to eat elsewhere if you prefer. On day 2 you stop at a Route 62 winery for lunch and a wine tasting. The Garden Route's food scene is excellent: Knysna is famous for fresh oysters and its local Mitchell's beer, Oudtshoorn for ostrich and Karoo produce, and the Cape for its wines.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?
Please tell us about any dietary requirements when you book. We are always willing to look at them and, where possible, we will do our best to accommodate you, although we cannot guarantee that every restaurant, hotel or boat on the route will be able to meet every need. Your guide will also help you find suitable options along the way.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is generally safe to drink in South Africa's cities and towns. However, if you prefer not to rely on tap water, we recommend bringing a Water-to-Go filter bottle for convenience and to reduce plastic waste. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
It's ideal for solo travellers. The group size of 4 to 12 people is perfect for socialising, the backpacker lodges have a friendly, social atmosphere, and included dinners are taken together as a group. Many of our Garden Route passengers are solo travellers.
Do I have to share a room?
If you book a solo place and are willing to share, we'll try to pair you with a same-gender solo traveller at no extra charge. If no match is available, the single supplement applies. Single, twin and double rooms are available in all locations; check the Single Room Supplement option for details of room sharing options and charges.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 4, maximum 12. The Garden Route attracts a broad mix of nationalities, primarily from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Average age is mid-30s. This is a shared-tour product and some passengers may have joined through other operators and agents. All tours are run in English.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures can be arranged with the flexibility to customise your accommodation and pace, or our sales team can create a completely tailor-made journey. Different vehicles can also be used on a private tour if the 14-seater minibus does not suit you. Contact us for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The minimum age is 14. The Garden Route is an active, social tour designed for adults and older teenagers, and the tight schedule means everyone needs to be ready to keep moving. For families with younger children, a private departure with adjusted activities may be arranged.
Do I need a visa for South Africa?
Most nationalities, including UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not require a visa for South Africa for stays under 90 days. Check the current requirements for your specific nationality well before departure, as rules can change.
What should I pack?
Pack for warm weather plus layers for cooler evenings and the mountain passes. Comfortable walking shoes and sandals, swimwear, lightweight trousers and shorts, a windproof jacket and a rain layer. Dull-coloured clothing is recommended for the Addo safari. Your luggage must fit the minibus trailer: one suitcase of maximum 67 x 45cm plus one carry-on of maximum 48 x 32cm, of a weight you can comfortably manage yourself. Bring sun protection: South Africa's sun is intense.
Are any vaccinations required?
For South Africa, Hepatitis A is the main additional vaccination recommended. The Garden Route itself has no malaria risk. If you're transiting through other African countries en route, check requirements for those. Consult your GP or travel clinic for current personalised advice.
How do I join the tour and get home afterwards?
On the morning of day 1 you're collected from a central Cape Town location of your choice; our team coordinates this with you before departure and advises your pickup time. Airport transfers and Cape Town accommodation are not included, so arrive in Cape Town at least the day before. The tour ends in Port Elizabeth in the early afternoon of day 5, in time for the early evening departures of many international flights.
What about tipping?
Tipping is expected in South Africa and tips for your guide and driver are not included in the price. The exact amount is always your choice; your guide will brief current suggested amounts at the start of the tour. Restaurant tips are typically around 10% for good service.
Can I do the 216m Bloukrans bungee jump?
Yes. The Bloukrans Bridge bungee jump is available as a locally bookable option on day 4, en route from Knysna to Tsitsikamma. At 216 metres it's the world's highest bridge bungee. Those not jumping carry on to Tsitsikamma National Park and the group reunites later in the day. Book and pay locally during the trip.
Can I do shark cage diving?
Yes. Shark cage diving is available as a locally bookable option on day 1. Participants depart Cape Town even earlier than the group, miss the first half of the day including the penguins at Betties Bay, and rejoin later. It should be reserved before your tour starts to guarantee your spot, with final booking and payment made to the local operator during the tour. Contact us to arrange.
Can I go whale watching?
Yes, in season (July to November). A whale watching boat trip from Hermanus is available as a locally bookable option on day 1, when Southern Right Whales gather off the town. Outside boat season you may still spot whales from the shore in Hermanus.
Can I add a safari extension after the tour?
Yes. You can add as many days as you like at a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, with round-trip transport from Port Elizabeth at the end of the tour. Extra nights in Port Elizabeth or at lodges outside Addo are also possible, and on day 5 there's an optional 2-hour open vehicle game drive with an Addo field guide. Contact us for options and current prices.
Can I add extra time in Cape Town before the tour?
Yes. Cape Town accommodation is not included in this 5-day version, so you can either book your own or ask us to arrange pre-tour nights. Cape Winelands and Cape Peninsula group tours can also be booked for your time in Cape Town; these join set departures and should be booked and paid for before you arrive in South Africa. If you want Cape Town built in, the 8-day Garden Route tour includes 3 pre-tour nights.
How far ahead should I book?
The Garden Route is popular year-round and departures with the Addo safari included often fill several months in advance. The tour departs weekly, but book as early as possible for peak summer and school-holiday periods.
How does booking work?
Reserve online through the Dates & Prices tab. Pay a deposit or hold your spot, with the balance due 8 weeks before departure. Choose your accommodation level (dorm, private backpacker or deluxe guesthouse) at the time of booking.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours and must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. If you're planning the bungee jump or shark cage diving, check your policy covers adventure activities. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers over 150 activities.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are in the booking conditions. All bookings are financially protected through Trust My Travel, a UK-registered financial protection scheme.
What if my dates are sold out?
Join the waitlist for your preferred departure, book a private departure, or add extra nights in Cape Town to bridge to the next weekly departure. The 6, 8 and 10-day Garden Route tours share the same core itinerary and may have space on dates that suit you. Contact the team to discuss your options.

My boyfriend and I and just returned from a South African trip booked by Encounters Travel. Awesome travel experience. Encounters handled everything from our flights to our hotel bookings. The flights that were booked were the best flights with the shortest times and layovers. All of our hotels were at least a 4 start some 5 stars. Every time I emailed the company I heard back from someone within about 24 hours. I would book and travel with them again.

Second trip with Encounters ... First one was good but Egypt was very professional. What an amazing experience. Arriving in Egypt at 3.45 a.m. (their local time), there was this guy with a HUGE smile and an Encounters sign ... MOHAMED KHALIFA. He escorted us through customs and took us to our hotel and settled us in with a very early check in. He went over our iternary and suggested some additional add-on. You immediately realize you are in good hands. Mohamed Khalifa you are exceptional.
Then there were our tour guides. The City Tour we did with Big Mo and the rest of the tour with SHERIFF. Sheriff is really an excellent guide. Our walking Encyclopedia of Egyptian History. His passion, sense of humor, his willingness to accommodate individuals and a fantastic person to hang out with. The tour guides made sure that their guest had a memorable experience. We love you GROUP Cccccccccccccccc.
Hats off to our drivers. Traffic is really insane in Cairo. You have to see it to believe it. But they are really professional at navigating through traffic.
SAFETY ... We never felt UNSAFE at any given time. We always had a guide and even had a guard walking with us. We were given time to do our own thing, shopping, take pictures and just chill. You weren't even aware of the guard but they were watching you. There is no crime ... one lady took a walk by herself after 10 the evening to have supper in a restaurant.
Lastly the PEOPLE of Egypt. They rely on Tourism to make a living. So yes, they hassle you all the time but they don't harass or threaten you in anyway. They can be annoying but otherwise friendly especially when they heard we were from South Africa. Then they would go BAFANA BAFANA.
Best way to see Egypt is with ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL ... they are professional, committed and organized not forgetting Mariska. This is the perfect way to see Egypt with all its history ... that way you don't miss out on anything.
Overall AMAZING experience. Will I do it again? .... YES.

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

I toured South Africa with Encounters Travel in February 2013. I am glad that I took the trip. The two guides were great. They were very friendly and knowledgeable and made everyone feel comfortable. The accomodations were excellent. The planned activities were fun and informative. I would definitely use Encounters Travel again for a trip.

I got a Living Social announcement for North American travelers for a 1 week South African tour with a 50% discount. All the group joined in the same manner. I am not sure what the regular price would have been for this Garden Tour so I cannot discuss the deal.

I could tell that the Encounters organization is very reliable. The preparation pamphlet is extremely important as it seems to describe the worse scenario one may encounter in adventure trip, and sets travelers to an easy going attitude and expectations. Everyone in my group cooperates to eventual restrictions in the community with maturity and a good sense of humour.

We run into no problem at all except an unannounced dowgrade in the 1st hotel. Lodging and food were very good. We were several to suggest less driving, at least some nights in Cape Town and more visits in thi Garden Tour.

As I come from Canada, I suggested a longer tour even though I may have to pay more. So I arranged myself extension of the stay (before and after the Tour) as I did not have enough of safari, artifact shopping in South Africa. The booking office in England would assist you to prolong your stay.

In particular, the Encounter Travel booking desk from England are very reliable, available and helpful. I trusted them fully and were not dissapointed at all. Thank you Anthony and your team !

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

As is typical on our Shoestring level tours, more than one level of accommodation is available on this trip. All options have been selected based on their cleanliness, service levels, setting and atmosphere. We also select places close to each other so often it is just a short walk between them. Included dinners are generally taken together at the backpacker lodge, though you are welcome to eat elsewhere if you prefer.

Backpacker Lodges:
The standard level of the tour is based on staying in good quality backpacker style lodges. These have a friendly, social vibe, and are ideal for younger travellers looking for a bit of an atmosphere. They often have a bar or bonfire area for socialising. Although available at a budget price, the standard of backpacker lodges in South Africa is generally very high. We offer options of shared dorms or private en-suite twin/double rooms within the Backpacker lodges. These can often surprise you with the level and quality of accommodation provided.

Deluxe Guesthouses / Boutique hotels:
If you would prefer some more comfort then we offer an upgrade option to stay in some really lovely deluxe guesthouses and small boutique style hotels instead of the backpacker lodges. These provide a more private, quieter and luxurious experience and can be fabulous places to stay, full of character and with beautiful gardens, friendly hosts, and great views. Accommodations most often used for the guesthouse upgrade are shown on the accommodations tab. Alternative properties of a similar standard may be used on some dates.

Addo National Park
At Addo both levels stay in a working citrus farm near the park (Avoca River Cabins) which has a unique location and style of accommodation and is a nice upgrade if you've chosen the Backpacker level.

Notes:
- Single, twin and double rooms are available in all locations.
- Heating or air conditioning is not provided as standard in most backpacker lodges, guesthouses or small hotels, just because it is not normally needed in South Africa! However, fans or extra blankets are always available on request if you need them.
- Accommodation providers are subject to change without notice. The properties listed are our preferred options, but sometimes due to availability or other issues with the property, we may substitute another property of similar standards.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
