Kathmandu Heritage and Sacred Hilltop Stupas

Day 2 Breakfast,Lunch
This Nepal tour starts with an exciting rickshaw ride through the backstreets of Thamel to Durbar Square, passing through small back streets full of numerous tiny shops, workshops, temples and stupas. Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its array of wooden and stone carved temples and palaces reflecting the legacy of the Malla kings, allows plenty of time to walk around and explore, and there is time here to visit the Living Goddess, Kumari. In Nepal, a young pre-pubescent girl is chosen from the Newar community to embody the goddess Taleju, a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Durga, and she is believed to be the living incarnation of the divine feminine and is worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. After an included lunch at Rum Doodles restaurant, drive to the important Swayambunath Stupa, which sits on a hilltop overlooking the city and is visible from miles around. Also known locally as the “monkey temple”, it is home to nimble inhabitants that can be seen scampering in and around the trees and temple. This holdings blends urban heritage with the spiritual landmarks that define Kathmandu’s cultural landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Nepal Family Adventure tour?
Nepal Family Adventure is a 14-day family trip from Kathmandu to Kathmandu that mixes cultural sightseeing with genuine outdoor adventure. Kids and parents tackle a 3-day Panchase Trek reaching 2,500m with views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Manaslu (8,156m), go white-water rafting on the Lower Seti River with an overnight camp, safari in Chitwan National Park for one-horned rhino and Bengal tiger, and explore Bhaktapur's pottery lanes and Boudhanath's spinning prayer wheels. Maximum 16 travellers in 3-star hotels, trekking lodges, and camp, with an internal flight to Pokhara. It's a proper family adventure rather than a sanitised package.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Nepal?
Yes. The 14-day itinerary introduces Nepal's three main environments: the Kathmandu valley's temples and UNESCO sites, the Pokhara region's Himalayan panoramas and trekking lodges, and the Terai's jungle wildlife at Chitwan. It's a comprehensive first Nepal experience that works for children and adults together.
What's the difference between this and Nepal Family Essentials?
Nepal Family Adventure (14 days) includes the 3-day Panchase Trek staying in trekking lodges. Nepal Family Essentials (11 days) does not include trekking and is better suited to families with younger children or those who prefer a lower physical challenge. Both share Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and Bandipur. If your family wants a real mountain trek, choose the Adventure; if younger legs or less fitness is a factor, choose Essentials.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
October to November and March to April are the classic Nepal windows: clear mountain views, comfortable trekking temperatures, and dry trails on the Panchase route. The summer monsoon (June-August) brings rain and reduced visibility. Winter (December-February) is cold at altitude but the Kathmandu valley and Chitwan are still very pleasant.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, Nepal can look affordable on a budget backpacker basis. What's included here is 13 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 7 dinners, an internal flight to Pokhara, a licensed trekking guide for the Panchase Trek, a white-water rafting session with all equipment, jeep and canoe safaris in Chitwan (a UNESCO World Heritage site), 3-star hotels, trekking lodge nights, and riverside camping, all managed for a family group with children. The range of activities and the internal flight contribute significantly to the value delivered.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 13 nights accommodation (3-star hotels, trekking lodges, riverside camp), 13 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 7 dinners, internal flight Kathmandu-Pokhara, white-water rafting on Lower Seti River with camping, Chitwan jungle walk, canoe trip, and jeep safari, Panchase Trek with local trekking guide, a momo making class, and all listed entrance fees.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, Nepal visa (available on arrival at Kathmandu airport), travel insurance, personal spending, and optional extras (Everest Mountain Flight, Bardia National Park Extension) are not included. Guide and driver tips are also separate. Your guide will brief current recommended amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. This gives families time to plan and budget without paying everything upfront.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate to fairly demanding for a family tour. The 3-day Panchase Trek involves hiking from around 1,500m to 2,500m on mountain trails with overnight stays in trekking lodges. Children need to be capable of multi-hour mountain walks on variable terrain. The white-water rafting on the Lower Seti River is Class II-III, which is exciting but manageable for confident families. Chitwan is gentle: walking, canoeing, and jeep safaris.
What's the minimum age for this tour?
Check with us at booking, but the trekking and rafting elements mean this tour is best for children aged around 8 and over who are physically capable of multi-hour hikes and comfortable in a river setting. Younger siblings may be better suited to Nepal Family Essentials (11 days), which has no trekking.
How do we handle altitude?
The Panchase Trek reaches 2,500m. At this altitude, mild headaches are possible but altitude sickness is unlikely. The itinerary includes acclimatisation time in Kathmandu and Pokhara before the trek begins. Drink plenty of water, take it steady on ascent, and your guide will monitor the group. It's a very accessible altitude compared to classic Nepal high-altitude treks.
What if a family member doesn't want to do the rafting?
Non-rafters can stay in Pokhara during the rafting day and rejoin the group when it returns. This is a pre-arranged option, so let us know at booking if this applies.
Is Nepal safe to visit?
Nepal is a very well-established destination for family travel and adventure tourism. Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the Chitwan region all have strong tourist infrastructure. The main safety considerations are traffic in Kathmandu city and trail conditions in wet weather. Your guide handles all logistics and will keep you well-oriented throughout.
Is it safe for solo female travellers?
Yes. Nepal is generally very safe for women, including solo travellers. The family tour format has its own natural group dynamic. In Kathmandu's tourist neighbourhoods and along the trekking routes, solo women are common and well-received.
What happens if someone gets sick on tour?
Your guide is your first call. Kathmandu and Pokhara have private hospitals and clinics familiar with trekker health issues. Chitwan has local medical facilities. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is compulsory and especially important given the remote trekking section. The CIWEC Travel Medicine Centre in Kathmandu is well-regarded for traveller health.
Is the internal flight to Pokhara safe?
Flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara operate on one of Nepal's busiest domestic routes and run daily. The route is well-established. Mountain weather can delay flights occasionally; this is normal and your guide will manage any schedule adjustments.
What's the accommodation actually like?
Kathmandu and Pokhara nights are in 3-star hotels with en-suite rooms. The Panchase Trek uses trekking lodges (teahouses) with simple but comfortable rooms, shared or en-suite depending on the lodge, hot showers, and hearty dal bhat meals. One night is riverside camping during the rafting section. Chitwan uses a lodge-style property near the national park.
What are the trekking lodges like?
Nepal's trekking lodges, known as teahouses, are a cornerstone of the Himalayan experience. Rooms are simple: beds, blankets, and basic furnishings. Hot showers are usually available (sometimes solar-heated). The dining rooms are warm and communal, and the food is freshly cooked. On the Panchase route at 2,500m, the evenings are cold, so bring warm layers.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara have Wi-Fi. Trekking lodges on the Panchase route may have limited connectivity. Chitwan lodges vary. A Nepal SIM card with data is worth getting at Kathmandu airport for reliable connectivity in the cities.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Yes. Private departures allow for upgraded hotel options in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Speak to us at booking.
What kind of food will we eat?
Nepalese cuisine is hearty and satisfying. Dal bhat (lentil soup, rice, and vegetable curry) is the trekking staple and is eaten twice a day by most Nepali people; it's nutritious and endlessly refillable on the trek. In Kathmandu, the Rum Doodles restaurant is an iconic lunch stop for trekkers. The momo making class in Pokhara teaches you Nepal's beloved dumplings. Chitwan lodge food tends toward Indian-influenced curries and rice dishes.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Drink bottled or filtered water throughout Nepal. On the Panchase Trek, use a water filter or purification tablets for lodge water. A Water-to-Go reusable bottle reduces plastic waste significantly over 14 days.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Nepal Family Adventure is designed for families but does welcome solo travellers who enjoy a family-friendly pace. The maximum group size of 16 makes it an intimate experience. If you're travelling solo and want a more adult-focused pace, our Classic Nepal or Nepal Discovery tours may suit you better.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available for hotel nights. In trekking lodges, single rooms are sometimes limited depending on the property. Confirm at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 3, maximum 16 travellers. The group is typically families with children of varying ages, and occasionally couples or solo travellers joining a family-paced tour.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. A private family departure is a popular option for this tour, allowing full flexibility on dates and pace. Contact us to discuss.
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
Nepal visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Bring a passport-size photo and the visa fee in cash (check current fees on the Nepal immigration department website before travel).
What should I pack?
Warm layers for trekking lodge evenings (temperatures drop sharply at 2,500m), a waterproof jacket, trekking boots (broken in), comfortable walking shoes for Kathmandu and Chitwan, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Pack light for the rafting and camping nights. Nepal uses Type C/D plugs at 230V.
Are any vaccinations required?
Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are recommended for Nepal. Check with your GP or travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure, especially for children.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into and out of Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). The internal flight to Pokhara is included in the tour. Book international flights independently once your tour booking is confirmed.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an important part of the Nepalese tourism economy. Your guide will brief the group on current recommendations for local guides, trek porters, and drivers. Plan to tip porters and the local trekking guide separately.
Can we do the Everest Mountain Flight?
Yes. An Everest Mountain Flight from Kathmandu is available as an optional extra, giving stunning views of Everest and the high Himalayas from a small aircraft. Weather dependent; early morning departures give the best chance of clear mountain views.
Can we extend with a Bardia National Park trip?
Yes. A 4-day Bardia National Park Extension is available after the main tour. Bardia is a wilder, less-visited park than Chitwan with Bengal tigers, greater one-horned rhinos, gharial crocodiles, and elephants. You'd stay at the Bardia Eco Lodge.
How far ahead should I book?
For school holiday departures and October-November peak season, book as early as possible: at least 3-4 months ahead. Internal flights and trekking permits are date-specific.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit for instant confirmation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation and repatriation is compulsory. Policies for this tour must cover trekking at altitude and white-water rafting. World Nomads covers both.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale policy applies, with charges increasing closer to departure. Full terms are in the booking conditions. UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Join the waitlist for your preferred departure, or consider Nepal Family Essentials (11 days) for nearby availability. Private departures on alternative dates are also possible.

My husband and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Encounters Travel for giving us the opportunity to experience the 10 Day Nepal Exposed Tour. Encounters Travel was great from even before the trip began in planning the trip, answering all our inquiries and providing us information in a timely matter. We would like to say this trip was phenomenal and left us both with memories and adventures that will last a lifetime.

We would like to give special recognition to our tour guide Ram Hari Aryal, who is a real professional and gave us individualized attention from the beginning of the trip when we arrived at the Kathmandu Airport to our departure back home. Ram really made this trip special for us and has such great knowledge of Nepal’s history, culture and geography. He also became a friend to us by the end of the tour.

The driver that accompanied us throughout the entire trip and drove us through the country deserves praise as well. He is polite and got out to open the door for us every time we stopped somewhere. He is a very good driver and we felt safe throughout the entire journey through the countryside.

In Kathmandu, we were assigned the same guide twice to show us through a few cities. His name was Prakash Luitel and he is wonderful and very knowledgeable of his country. The fellow who was our guide in Chitwan National Park was also very professional, energetic and friendly.

The accommodations were fabulous. All the hotels that we stayed in were great. We especially were impressed by Apsara Boutique Hotel in Kathmandu for their splendid rooms and exceptional staff. Another favorite of ours was Gaun Ghar located in Bandipur. We loved the décor of the hotel with stone floors and walls it gave us the feel that we were back in the 19th century. Also, great manager and staff that really made you feel at home. Not to mention the view of the mountains from our room that made us feel like we were in heaven.

We traveled through Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Bandipur and Nagarkot. My husband and I asked each other at the end of the trip which city did we like the best. The both us could not pick one. We liked all of them. They all had their unique and individual charm and beauty. These are a few of our many favorite highlights of the trip:

1. Everest Mountain Flight
2. Tour of Lalitpur aka Patan
3. Monkey Temple (Kathmandu)
4. Chitwan National Park wildlife safari
5. Boat ride on Phewa Lake (Chiwan)
6. World Peace Stupa (Pokhara)
7. Devi Falls (Pokhara)
8. Boudhanath Supa (Kathmandu)
9. Durbar Square (Kathmandu)
10. Pasupatinath (Kathmandu)

Every day was wonderful on this tour and a real adventure. We would love to take another tour again in the future and we would recommend Encounters Travel to our family, friends and coworkers.

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism: we recommend that you advertise to potential travelers the option of extra days in Kathmandu more prominently and frequently in your literature. We didn’t realize until much later that we could’ve extended our stay for such little cost. We would’ve done it if the option had emphasized.

Under Day 12, the “upgrade to an [sic] domestic flight” is misleading. We assumed that if we took the flight we wouldn’t miss anything on the agenda. Big mistake! Thank God we called your office and clarified that we’d not see Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Pasupatinath and Boudhanath. What a loss that would’ve been!

Nepali toilets are not up to Western standards. A tip to bring one’s own toilet paper (and lots of it), and to prepare for horrific sights and smells, would’ve been appreciated.

We strongly urge you to include Lalitpur (Patan) in the Class Exposed itinerary. It doesn’t take so long to see and it’s well worth making time for. We also were a little disappointed that we couldn’t see Lumbini, Buddha’s birthplace.

Thank you again for an epic experience!

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

  1. Hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bandipur
We use comfortable tourist class hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara (approx. 3 star). The hotels in Bandipur are at a slightly lower level but make up for it with some great mountain views.
  1. Trekking with lodges
For this lodge-based trek, we will use a variety of Lodges and Teahouses. In recent years many new lodges have sprung up and many offer quite good facilities and amenities.  However, in some areas the lodges can be run on a very simple basis where toilets and washing facilities are outside the building. We can’t promise that you will always have full amenities all the time, so you should understand this before embarking on this trek.

Staying in lodges gives you more comfort overnight than camping, and also allows you to meet up with and talk with other trekkers and guides at the end of the day. It also allows us to put more back into the local economies than if we were bringing everything with us.

Rooms in lodges are normally based on same sex sharing of twin rooms (though couples and families will be able to share).  Some sheets & blankets are provided but a sleeping bag is still required. We provide the option to hire a sleeping bag in our trekking pack option, though you may still wish to bring your own inner sleeping bag liner or sleep sheet if you wish.  Warm showers are available for a small fee at most lodges, though these may be bucket showers higher up.
  1. Safari lodges in Chitwan National Park
At Chitwan National Park, we use safari lodges with comfortable clean rooms and en-suite bathrooms.   We normally use lodges in and around the village of Sauraha on the edge of the park, which increases the number of activities you can do while at the park.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
